    Animal/Livestock Nutritionist

    Hi everyone,

I'm having a bit of a career crisis.  I'm at uni doing a degree that I hate and am looking into all the possible alternatives, one of which is an animal science degree and then becoming an animal nutritionist.  I was wondering if anyone knows of any animal nutritionists that I could speak too or are an animal nutritionist themselves?  Also, I was wondering what part they play in livestock farming and if there were any jobs in the sector and what the pay was like?  Thanks for any help

    xx

your best bet would be to ring up various feed companies, would you be looking at equine or farm animal nutrition? also, try a few stores such as countrywide perhaps? best bit of advice to do something you actually like/have an intrest in though, it makes it much easier! =)

To pick up charliemoo's theme. I have done some work at various of the companies who provide feed through the retail sector. and, at the time, they all used 'independent' nutritionists. Have you also thought about being a human nutritionist? I reckon that that is a sector which is increasingly coming to the fore because of concerns about human health and a likelihood of food shortages.

Whatever you choose however, don't get too depressed. We all have 'off'' periods in our lives, but the fact is that life is wonderful when we see it that way.

    Re: Animal/Livestock Nutritionist

    Hi guys,

Thanks to both of you for your advive.  I have got in contact with several equine feed companies to ask for advice and info but none have got back to me yet so I might have to ring them again.  I'd probably try and do a bit of equine and livestock work, but don't know of any livestock nitritionists of livestock nutrition companies. Are there any good ones or ones that offer graduate schemes?

As for human nutrition, I'm just finished my first year of a health related degree and didn't like it...I think it was because there were no animals involved! So I don't think I could do human nutrition at the mo, but I agree it is something that is growing in importance and demand so I might be something that I look into in the future.

    Thanks again

    xx
