Any ideas for feed trough surfaces?

Has anyone got any ideas for improving feed trough surfaces without replacing the concrete?

I've heard about people using rolls of PVC or lining with tiles to help ease of cleaning and to improve dry matter intakes - what works best?

How about a thick layer of floor paint, or one of those expensive equivalents for coating industrial workshop floors? There seems to be a catalogue for them fall out of every magazine just recently!

I have done some cattle troughs with stockboard, it expands a lot when the sun gets on it but otherwise it is very hygienic and the 12mm stuff although expensive stays on the bottom on its own.

For pigs I have used quarry tiles but they are very tricky to grout in and the company that made them (apparently the only one in the world) is no longer trading.  Pity as they are saliva proof.

If the concrete is just cracked or chipped at the edges you could try some screed which is made for the job. it would be the cheapest option, the concrete would have to be pressure washed clean first though.

I was going to say epoxy resin, as long as it is OK for the animals done properly it should make a good seal. Would need renewing every now and again I suppose.

www.hdsharman.co.uk gives you the link to the manufacturer of a product called Plygene. I have not checked out the site, but Plygene was used in the early 1990s for lining feed troughs. It was advertised in at least some of the farming press at that time. I have not used it, and rather surprised myself that I remembered the name of the product.

There's an advert on page 15 of this weeks Farmers Weekly for a firm that does floor paints and epoxy coatings.

The cheapest, so most sensible option is screed. The paint option will not last long enough to be financially worth while. Another option is to glue a fibre glass coating into it.
