    autocast/ variocasting

Is it possible to autocast or use an Einbock seeder style unit for sowing small seeds such as stubble turnips or even grass seed in stubble? Traditionally I've direct drilled stubble turnips but autocast would be cheaper should i worry about seed/ soil contact or do they need a bit of depth to go into?

Yes you can but even with Autocasting straight off the combine you still need to roll the stubble straight after to get seed to soil contact. The Autocast system in my experience is very prone to slug problems but we were only sowing rape not so sure about stubble turnips or grass and after a year changed to a terrast fitted to a cambridge roll towed behind a trailed press. This is a safer bet in my experience. You canfit a terracast or similar to either a subsoiler or surface type cultivator like a vaderstad carrier or lemken terradisc just infront of the rear roller or to set of rollers towed behind a similar cultivator this is certainly very cost effective and worked well for rape

Beware of the einbock setting and seed rates are very difficult further the electric drive needs connecting direct to the battery or you will need a new wiring loom if you are not careful

We have good results from establishing stubble turnip in a standing cereal crop using a Stocks spreader (as used for applying slug pellets). Usually apply in early July before the Barley is harvested, once the straw is cleared the stubble turnips are usually at the 3-4 tlf stage. Never usually have to roll after the crop has been harvested but if there has been poor germination there is always that option to aid germination. Hope this helps.

We've used autocast to establish oilseed rape after wheat for five years now, and would never bother with any other system, as the benefits are tremendous. Slugs need to be watched, and we routinely mix mini pellets with the seed on a one-to-one basis by weight.Follow up with a surface application within acouple of days of autocasting and you will be laughing! Rolling is definitely recommended for soil/seed contact. Can't see why this shouldn't work for stubble turnips! The biggest advantage is in not moving the ground, and therefore preventing germination of weeds and subsequently saving on herbicides although I don't suppose that is too relevant with stubble turnips!.
