Best way to go about getting hands on experience

Hi, I have been offered a place at Aberystwyth for 2012 to study agriculture and animal science, its something that I am really interested in, most of my previous experience (not much) has been with beef cattle, and the odd chance of helping during calving time, and the occasional fruit farming as well, the rest of my experiance lies in the equine industry, what would be the best way to go about getting more experience, dont want to turn up to go to uni not having the same amount of hands on experience that the others will, not expecting to get paid for the opportunity for any experience that i can get as i would probably be more of a liability to begin with! I know how to drive a tractor and a forklift if that helps :)

    Thanks

Try Laverstoke Park Farm in Hants, they take a number of students every year and have a variety of livestock, googlr the website for contact details to the education centre.

Hi, Im just about to set up my own farm. I wanted get some experience first so on leaving school i approched local farmers just offering work in return for experience, as well as going to college and working to build up funds ive helped the same farmer now for the last 11 years. Ive learnt how to do everything i think ill need myself. I also now have a experienced friend on call and have access to all his equipment if i need! Id just try a few local farmers tell them what your doing. A lot of people would be willing give you a leg up! just dont let them take the mickey!

     Best of luck.
