    Bulk Feed Storage

Anybody got any comments or recommendations for bulk feed storage of cattle feed. (nuts or rolls) We want to buy a bin or silo so we can get bulk deliveries by blower wagon and also something that is rat proof. Ideally one that can be outside but could build a roof over it if cost effective. Or any secondhand - Scottish Highlands-Inverness-shire

Only that it will be money well spent - we bought one for dairy rations almost 20years ago now, and it's had no problems of any kind in all that time, including the discharge augers. It is starting to rust a bit though!

the following is probably not suitable for cake but suits our sugar beet nuts. We blow into a high roof shipping container, and our aging Kramer 312 fits in nicely to get the nuts out to put in the mixer. The doors can be closed to make it vermin proof but rats don't like beet pulp Neil

what evr you get make it well ventilatted and keep ( feed ) it dry and turn it every so often or you will end up with damp moldy weevel infessted feed stuffs also if you intendto make your own feed and grind it the flour from the ration is a favorite with cows i used it sprinkled over the top of poor - fair silage and the cows liked it then corrigatted steel or iron seamed to be fairly good but do not use aliminum because it reacts with magnisieum ( in the feed ) to cause explosive effects

It will be one of the best moves you ever made. As a lamb and egg producer it always strikes me that no-one would contemplate starting even a small poultry (or pig) enterprise without bulk bins, yet I've seen sheep flocks of considerable size still paying the premium for bagged feed.

I bought a collinson bin a few years ago and I would not do with out it now.It did cost about two thousand pound for a six ton bin with side shute, which allows you to put through a wall.Ask yourself how long you will use the bin in the year compared say to a muck spreader
