    Caking Ewes.

How much do you feed your twin and triplet ewes?  Aiming for zero mortality and getting pretty close I start the triplets off 6 weeks prior to lambing at 1/4 lb per head rising to 2 lb for the last week. (raddled and scanned).  Twins start at 4 weeks prior and rise to 1 1/2lb for last week.  Lambs are strong but not too big but ewes have loads of milk.

This made a neighbour's jaw drop.  He doesn't scan and feeds all ewes 1/2 lb for 2 weeks prior.  But he does admit to hating lambing "because of all the dead lambs".  What do you do?

I'd say you're doing it right Browncow. As a rule of thumb I'd say build up to a pound per lamb towards the start of lambing. Cake is expensive but thin ewes and weak lambs are no use to anyone.

Well fed ewes and strong lambs make for a far easier lambing, surely with last years lamb prices we can afford to feed them properly ?

We scan our sheep at this month, twins/triplets and thin singles will be split into two lots, early and lates (crayons changed on tups at 10 days). We will start to feed the earlies soon after scanning (start lambing 1st April), I have a snacker for the quad and dont work on lbs per sheep but would usually aim to use around 1 25kg bag to 130 ewes and build it up over a few weeks to two bags for the last 3 weeks prior to lambing. Main thing I want is an April like last year as it was a dream year for lambing sheep!

we are feeding about the same amount, again all ewes are scanned and separated into their pens any thin ewes go in with the triplets and start cake at about 7 weeks b4 due date, They start on around 1/2lb and by the end of that week are up to 1lb/head for a week creeping up to 2. 1/2 lb in the last 2 weeks, doubles are started 5 weeks b4, again on 1/2lb creeping up to 2lb last 2 weeks and singles don't get any till the last 2 weeks then get about 1lb/head, also all have assess to molasses, hay and straw.
