If you can get a positive ID on the species and variety I can give you more information, but by the description "Canary Grass" it should be a Phalaris. Various Phalaris varieties are grown in Australia as cattle feed. Some of the early ones were high in alkaloid content but not a real problem unless grazed exclusively.
