California utility: Keep your chickens grounded
2003-06-27 19:30:16 GMT (Reuters)
SAN FRANCISCO, June 27 (Reuters) - Pacific Gas & Electric on Friday asked the public not to launch any more chickens into its power lines.
The utility is keen to avoid a repeat of last weekend's escapade in which some San Francisco prankster tied about 100 helium balloons to a chicken and sent it aloft where it became tangled in local power lines.
The chicken, though uninjured, was left dangling for about three hours while PG&E crews brought it back to earth. The rescue effort required cutting power to about 5,000 people.
PG&E spokesman Jason Alderman said, "It's pretty outrageous somebody would do this and that's why we're asking the public today not to do something like this in the future."
The chicken is being put up for adoption by a local animal shelter, which has also launched an investigation to find those responsible.
