Counting the cost of GM segregation

I have just received a detailed press release from Friends of the Earth, explaining that GM crops should never be grown in the EU becuase the cost of keeping them separate from non-GM feed supplies is too high.

The statement quotes an EU commission estimate that segregation could put up the cost of the product by 13%. "But the real figure is far higher," it says.

This chimes very closely with the argument put forward repeatedly by the feed and poultry industries - that insisting on total separation in rations is pushing up costs and damaging the economics of poultrymeat production. But when the feed and farming industries say it, Friends of the Earth accuses them of exaggeration and scaremongering......
