    Dagging Sheep

    is dagging sheep just shearing around the bum to prevent excretion mixing with wool?

    please correct me if im wrong as im only just starting to learn about sheep

    That's probably the main point of it. I'm sure the timing and procedure varies alot from region to region but when I had wool sheep I would dag (we call it tagging here) before lambing and would either shear the bellies or 1/2 belly to make the udder cleaner and more accessable for the new lambs. Also easier to see the ewes bagging up. Not everyone around here did bellies as the shearers charge extra for that. Since I was doing my own shearing cost wasnt  a factor for me.

     We dag them up when they are mucky so as to help prevent them getting fly strike as well as trimming them anything that looks a little mucky up when tupping as the rams are not very keen or sucessful otherise. We also dag them you at lambing so we are able to spot any problems a lot easier with out the wool there.

    Daggings are the rear end wools with muck attached.  Doddings are the lumps of muck.

    Thus:   Daggings are Doddings with wool on ! whereas Doddings are Daggings minus the wool.
