    Digital Dermatitis

I would be interested to know if any one has tried the Dermaclean foot bath and spray product from Ron Fields nutrition, and what results they had, and just how big a problem it is in the UK

Tried the sample could only use it on 2 cows, as only a small sample, appears to work fine, open sores now gone, and cows walking better

Havn't heard of this product, however dependant on your management system, your cheapest option would be salt. Was part of an MDC study with them and SAC a few years back, which involved farmer groups who trialled different options to decrease DD. The most cost effective "broad brush" approach was when cows walked through a 5% salt solution at every milking. This has three main effects, 1) Will help heal any open sores - rather than sting them with some products. 2) Creates and environment around the foot which most DD bacteria will not survive on. 3) cheapest option However like any footbathing regime, you must do a few things if you want to get on top of the problem. - Keep walkways clean of dung and also keep feet clean before entering footbath. - Bath every milking - Clean out Foot Bath and replace when needed. On a 250Litre footbath, that would mean including 12.5Kg of Salt - Mixed with warm water so that it is in suspension and then cooled down to a lukewarm/cool temperature for the cow. Good luck

    Re: Digital Dermatitis

Many thanks for information, will give it a try, have been using the free trial gel for a while now, it works great on the worst cases, and just started to use the footbath variant also, so cant comment on that as only the second time I have used it, but cows more happy to walk through it than formalin, not the cheapest product out there, but appears to do what they claim, and cows certainly happier with it than formalin
