Peter Wells:Since the 'improved' fuel was introduced to 'save the planet.' The Rayburn cokes up three or four times a year and the burner has to be dismantled and cleaned. For the last three deliveries of oil I have had Topanol added which was supposed to eliminate the build up of carbon deposits. It hasn't.
Therefore I shall save myself the additional £15 of cost next time.
Does anyone else have the same problem, or a real environmentally friendly solution?
Those rayburn burners are not very tolerant, are they?
I suppose they might run nicely on purified snake oil.
The real answer is a different burner, probably pressure jet, and I suppose you might be able to get one as a retrofit.
My own answer was to fix a bit of chain to the rayburn and employ it usefully as a boat mooring, having fitted a good woodburning stove, efficient oil boiler, electric oven and bottled gas hob. I'm just about to install solar PV, so I suppose I could claim the electric oven was "green". Our 4-burner gas hob is used to cook at least one meal almost every day, and gets through one 19kg propane cylinder per year, so the cost and gas usage are hardly worth bothering about.
