    Domestic oil heating

Since the 'improved' fuel was introduced to 'save the planet.' The Rayburn cokes up three or four times a year and the burner has to be dismantled and cleaned. For the last three deliveries of oil I have had Topanol added which was supposed to eliminate the build up of carbon deposits. It hasn't.

Therefore I shall save myself the additional £15 of cost next time.

Does anyone else have the same problem,  or a real environmentally friendly solution?

I had a wood burning AGA for many years, used windfall wood from the farm, heated all the domestic water, and did all the household cooking including breadmaking etc. With so many neg. With so many neglected woodlands and game covers, there should be enough wood for most land owners to use solid fuel burners, establishing a coppice is also a viable option for future use.

Those rayburn burners are not very tolerant, are they?

I suppose they might run nicely on purified snake oil.

The real answer is a different burner, probably pressure jet, and I suppose you might be able to get one as a retrofit.

My own answer was to fix a bit of chain to the rayburn and employ it usefully as a boat mooring, having fitted a good woodburning stove, efficient oil boiler, electric oven and bottled gas hob. I'm just about to install solar PV, so I suppose I could claim the electric oven was "green". Our 4-burner gas hob is used to cook at least one meal almost every day, and gets through one 19kg propane cylinder per year, so the cost and gas usage are hardly worth bothering about.

During our  Rayburn service last year, the service engineer recommended that we should use a similar  additive, however our fuel supplier stated that for our ancient solid fuel converted to oil Rayburn with a vapourising burner there shouldn't be any problems. Touch wood, the Rayburn went for six months without a break but we do get through a heck of a lot of kerosene compared to a modern Aga/Rayburn.

The Don burner in the old rayburns is so simple and reliable. l service mine when ever it goes out, ie when it has built up enough crud to stop the oil flow.

Must admit l do a preventative clean in December, me thinks l may be hanging from a very tall tree if it went out christmas morning!

You are right, however we get a lot of power cuts and the gravity fed system gives us hot water, heat in the (north facing) kitchen and cooking without the need for electricity.

Thus,  we save the planet by reducing the need to generate power for the Rayburn.
