    Drying grain in bentall bins

Hi All, i am in need of some advice.

We have the use of 5 100t round bentall grain bins. Two of which are drying bins using forces air from a fan.

On the fan are 3* 12KW electric heating elements which i am not sure are working.

Being very small and having our own small combine we have ony needed to dry crop once before.

I have a chart about RH and grain moisture.

My problem is i am getting confliction info about when to turn on and off of the fan, It has been suggested that i run the fan all day and night as you over dry the grain at the bottom and over night you put back moisture in tthe bottom. This method maintains the drying front moves up the bin. Others say only run bins when RH is going to have a drying effect but i have been told that this can cause the drying front to get stuck if you cant run fan for several days.

What do you do if it raining ON or OFF,

    Advice Please.

A bloke called Bill Basford is the man to answer your questions. Or find some of his books on the subject (W.D. Basford et al.).

If it is raining, it just means that it was 90-100% RH where the rain was formed (up in the sky). I was told not to use fans during consecutive days of condensing fog, as this means the RH at ground level is 90-100%.

The book is "Drying and storing combinable crops". Might be out of print now though. Bill Basford now runs drying courses, based near Nottingham.
