    erysipelas in free range hens

Just had it confirmed that my hens have got erysipelas, unfortunatly dying in big numbers, anyone else had this? We dont know where it has come from no pigs on farm. The estate next door rears 70,000 pheasants and they've just been released six weeks ago any connection? Last crop we caught mycoplasma at the same time mid august this crop were vaccinated for mycoplasma and were doing OK until now, vet has told me not economic to treat, will I have to vaccinate my next crop. Cannot afford any disease next crop as feed price I expect will be very high.  Any advice gratefully recieved.

I've just had a quick search on the web and yes it seems pheasants can catch it and suffer from the disease, but not necessarily the source. It can be spread via faeces and seems to be soil borne and can spread by biting flies.

Try reading more on it at
