Foot and Mouth spreads to Dorking, Surrey

At the moment it is 2am on  Friday , Aug 10th.   Reports on Sky News and BBC  World  an hour ago state that Foot and Mouth  is suspected , not yet confirmed, in cattle  near Dorking , Surrey , about  7 miles east of Guildford.  The new outbreak is outside the previous surveillance zone  and now creates a third F and M zone. This is very bad news , because the disease  has not been contained.

Dorking is in a VERY  busy traffic area . It is only  4 miles south of the M25  and is also on the very busy  A24 road south, which many use  24/7  to get to nearby Gatwick airport.  If F and M  DOES  survive long enough outside host animals  to be spread by people and vehicles , then heaven help  British agriculture!  It could not occur in a much busier part of the UK. Traffic is non-stop, day and night, around Dorking  !!!

If  animal pyres are  started in that area , imagine all the smoke rising high into the sky  around  Gatwick Airport and the  devastating global publicity!

Unlike previous outbreaks  , "urban London  man in stockbroker belt"  is being affected by Foot and Mouth  like never before.  There is a HUGE  population in Surrey and it seems that the Government is doing its best not to upset those wealthy ,influential urbanites , by closing all their Public Paths and inconveniencing  their lives.

Ramblers  Association groups in particular, are being paid  far too much  respect, it seems!!

It is ridiculous !   There are still many public paths open in the first two zones. Now there is a THIRD zone  a few miles to the east. Why  were  ALL public highways in those zones ,  involving walking, mountain bikes and horses NOT SHUT FROM THE START??  It would be impossible to shut public roads, but footpaths and bridleways should have been closed  and POLICED , if necessary.

CLOSE ALL PUBLIC PATHS  CROSSING SURREY FARM LAND!!!   FARMING IS A THOUSAND TIMES MORE IMPORTANT THAN  RAMBLING !!

Just looking at the map - and not knowing the area - can anyone tell me if there is a link between the two areas involved now, where I am seeing North Downs Way, or is it just misleading lines perhaps indicating something else?

As i said I don't know the area but when I looked on the map and panned from one affected area to the 'new' area under restrictions, I kept seeing North Downs Way on the map and wondering if there is a  link or connection.

We are awaiting the tests from Dorking but initial reports suggest they are unlikely to prove positive.

The connection was that the Dorking farm belongs to Laurence Matthews who also has land near Pirbright where the second outbreak was - although they weren't his cattle.

As far as we know, Mr Matthews was being extremely diligent yesterday when is cattle in Dorking looked a little unwell, but a) they seem to be much better today and b) it looks as though this won't prove to be F & M.

I think we should applaud him for his sensible action of calling in the vets yesterday as precaution.

Good news indeed that Mr Matthews herd has been given the all clear (latest news reports), and I agree with Julian that he should be applauded for taking the cautious approach he did.

It's great news if the Dorking case is not F and M. If it had spread out of the first zone, alarm bells would have been really ringing.

I still cannot believe that we  ........as a country and farming industry ......have got away with this  outbreak so lightly!

I have always been superstitious [ due to catalogue of bad  events , not logic]  about the 13th of every month........and it is the 13th on Monday!!!  BEWARE MONDAY THE 13TH  !!!!

If we can get past that day without new F and M cases, then we may have indeed got away with it...........but I have a sneaking  feeling!!!

CLOSE  ALL  SURREY FOOTPATHS  AND BRIDLEWAYS!!
