How much is left to cut?

Here in FW Towers we're trying to work out what acreage of cereals are left to cut.

We've had reports that 35-40% of the UK's normal cropping is yet to come in off the fields but obviously there is massive regional variation.

How much have people got left? Has anyone written crops off?

I have 30% of my area still to harvest, -spring barley and wheat. Yields and quality have been surprisingly good, laying some of my fears, I will post my results once I get the sold weights and results. (East Scotland).

When in Rome, do as the Romans do.

70% of harvest is still left to cut here as gales blow & rain lashes down on already soaked ground . ( split;  530 acres spring barley 80 acres wheat not yet harvested) Totally ****** off with bad weather, bad weather forecasts  and hearing about people who have finished harvest and boasting about record yields.....Oliver**** 4t Walston!  Although there is still a huge amount of harvesting to do in this area, crops largely still standing up and not yet written off, but for how much longer?

Re: How much is left to cut?

Down here in soggy South Wales I still have about 40% combinable crops (wheat, naked oats and spring beans left to cut). Some neighbours have yet to start wheat and there is still some winter barley to cut. What is out in the field is either flat or sprouting-in some cases both! With over 5" of rain in the last few days, there is little chance of getting back out there in the near future.Interesting to note that local grain merchants reckon that nationally 70% of the cereal harvest has been cut-no doubt to try and drive the price down even further! It will be interesting to see via this forum what the true picture really is!

    Put it this way.. ALOT!

Barley is in, OSR is too, oats is due to be finished as soon as the weather permits, we havent started in wheat yet. Last year all the wehat was finished by the middle of enxt week - it hasnt been started yet and with the weather up here it looks like its still going to be a while. We have one field of 60 acres of OSR drilled and rolled but thats it which is a mere frac tion of what should be in.

" fields of straw have been baled, the rest has had to be chopped (well barley anyway) due to the weather and it rotting!

Sorry to see the pics of Northumberland. I'd be forgetting about rape drilling up there now, and forgetting about using any type of disc on heavy land. We need a good fortnight for the land to dry up before we even think about cutting again. Forget the moisture - we just want to travel. Looks like a big ripper job and plenty of frost ploughing / spring ploughing.

Take the dough and stay real jiggy.
    Uh-huh.

Everyday the weather permits our combines are cutting, and at the same time our 8530 has the solo on and our claas challenger has a set of solo disks too providing they can travel.

Its going to take a good while to dry up up here. Our wholecrop was meant to be cut a while ago, it was dry enough just machinery could not travel on the land. There is no chance of doing any field work at the moment what so ever, fields are sitting with water on top. One of our yards where the grain store is got flooded out and we had about 3 inches of wet wheat that had hardened onto the ground - not because we have bad drainage at all its due to the amout of rain there has been it just wont go away and although the concrete is tapered down to drains off the pad, the grain is still getting soaken and getting lumps in it causing us bad problems in the intake pit and drier.

Straughans had a pic on harvest highlights of them baling (there a local contractor) and i'm really surprised they got many bales made due to the moisutre in straw.

Brave with the solo. Our clay is wet and wont see a set of discs now. Big tyned cultivator only - I'd quite like a new one built from the same tynes as the solo st, just with about 30 in over 6m.

Re: How much is left to cut?

I your right about the Solo ST tines, i replaced some of them on ours, pre-cultivation and there pretty good. Would do the job in these conditions providing they had plenty HP in front of them.

Yes I agree with you.Every where there is a regional variation. Now a days this is a big problem.i.e,change in language, living style and culture.Obviously there is off craff's also.
