Identi-kit Competition 1 (winner now announced)

Are you a machinery buff? Know your hydrostatic from your hydraulic? Know your macerator from your actuator?

If so, this is the competition for you – it's a great chance to pit your wits against your friends and colleagues and win £20 in the process. Every month, we'll be publishing six pictures of machines or equipment taken from close-up, oblique or unusual angles and we want you to identify what's in the photos. Some will be easy, some will take all your experience, knowledge and judgement. Here are the first six. All you've got to do is tell us what they are.

Just post your answers here on this thread (if you haven't registered before with FWi, you'll need to do so, but it's very quick and simple).

Obviously other people will be able to see your suggestions - but we thought it would make it more fun if everyone can see what everyone else is suggesting. You can explain why you think other people are wrong, if you'd like to. Obviously, you might be tempted to delay adding your answers until the very last minute because you're reluctant to share them - but don't delay too long because in the event of more than one person getting all six answers comprehensively right, it'll be the person who posted the right answers first who's named the winner. We also hope that some good-natured debate and disagreement concerning the items' identity is what'll make this competition fun. And let’s face it, winning isn't everything. After all, £20 isn't going to exactly fund your new state-of-the-art tractor or combine, is itBig Smile

Tell us what machine or piece of kit the photo is of (the more precise you can be in terms of make and model where appropriate, the better) and if you want to really impress us tell us (again, where appropriate) what the actual item/part pictured is. The closing date for Identi-kit 1 is Sept 20.

    Now Then!!!

Picture one is a little obvious as the sharp end of a Class Combined harvesting machine. Picture 6 is a proper antique Massey Ferguson potato digger/elevator/harvester, call it what you like. I bet there's not many left eh..

    1. Claas; a big one, but still looks as unhappy as my little machine as the rain lashes down on it.

    2. The gromblett nurdling engagement lever on a 1956 Nudson-Fromping mobile chuffer - the Mk 2, of course.

    3. Ford 4600?

    4. Part of a Fendt Playstation - sorry, dashboard.

    5. I reckon, looking at the paddle-style 4wd engagement lever, that that's an Arctic Cat/MasseyF ATV

    6. A rolling landmine destroyer left over from D-Day?

    Re: Identi-kit Competition 1

    1. Lexion 600 (at least).

    2. Hand PTO clutch for David Brown 900 series. Or, something completely different.

    3. Ford 3000.

    4. Some form of Quad-Bike. Guess - Honda.

    5. Massey-Ferguson 711 Tattie harvester. (My one is in a farm museum today. My record achievement was over two acres in a day! But usually about 1 1/4 to 1 3/4 acres a day. A very clever design and an excellent harvester for a wee farm).

Picture 6 was one of MF best spud slicers when wet and could serve a mole occasionally on the operating table. First man on got the big spuds and always put your best picker last who was used to pressure to get the seed .

    Re: Identi-kit Competition 1

    2. Its a BD Implematic.  Don't know which but guessing at 990

    3. I don't think you can tell the diff between a 3 and 4000 from the grille - show us a bit of axle and it's easy but pic 3 is a Ford "force" 1000 series, so going for a 4000, but I don't get why the cut-outs in the grill. Looks like the horn is missing (maybe).  I guess it has had something front mounted (bolted) and there is a bit of a frame of some sort at the front, but apart from loader (which I don't think it is), a weight tray other than the standard weight block(which I don't think it is becuase that would cover the machined face on the front tombstone) or something not actually connected, I can't think what.

Everything else is far too modern for me Big Smile

     Hi all,

Pic 1 a new Class combine in field mode (the header is at the front). The paint on the auger is untouched therefore new? As I cant see the drive motor for the reel it must be coming in from the other side (or middle) this may tell us the model of header?

    Pic 2 Don't know, yet

Pic 3 1000 series Ford front grill, damaged needing headlamp reallignment

Pic 4 ISObus control center probably Fendt

Pic 5 Safety instructions for the Safe use of the Quad

Pic 6 MF Priddy harvester still working (obviously at a vintage rally as the guy is smiling, well sort off)

    Re: Identi-kit Competition 1

Going back to no 2, as I said earlier a DB Implematic; it's part of the hydraulic control system and you can see the bottom of the quadrant/lift lever going up to the top left of the picture. I always understood TCU to be their traction control system, which continued in the selectematic generation of tractors. Again my understanding is it's the equivalent of "draft" and "position" but the TCU would also handle a hydraulic depth wheel on a semi-mounted plough.

Yes, ogwi. I think your observations are correct. Certainly not a hand brake. We used to have a DB 900 and it had the DB traction Control Unit. I think you are right in that it is basically the draft control set up. ( my father also had two DB Cropmasters. They were great for two folk as they had a long bench seat).

Thanks Ogwi I didn't know what it was.

I like your sense of humor, talking about a semi-mount plough and a red DB in the same sentence.

    Your imagination knows no bounds.

    Thanks again

Photo 1 is a Lexion 600tt not a 770 because it has square lights! and it has a V1200 on it, I can tell that by the shape of the white panels on the side.

Right, by shamelessly nicking other people's most confident entries in a desperate attempt to get Tim's Tantalising Twenty, my list is:

    1. V1200 header on a Lexion 600tt

    2. Draft control system on a DB.

    3. Front grill of a Ford 4600

    4. Fendt Variotronic control pad

    5. Front left wing of Massey Ferguson ATV

    6. Massey Ferguson 711 potato harvester.

Send the cheque to the Jolly Flowerpots, Tim!

    Charlie Flindt:
    2. The gromblett nurdling engagement lever on a 1956 Nudson-Fromping mobile chuffer - the Mk 2, of course.

Charlie, Can you explain this verbose perambulation?

    Re: Identi-kit Competition 1

Ah, well, Ally, picture 2 does look a bit like the 1956 Nudson-Fromping mobile chuffer - you must remember how the Mk1 revolutionised chuffing in the 1950s; I'm not sure it didn't get a RASE award in about '54. Fantastic machine - it meant that countless thousands of farm workers were cured of chronic tennis elbow, especially in the right arm, although RSI (or whatever it was called back then)  did tend to strike in the left ankle. Hence the modifications for the Mk2, which used a left-handed thread gromblett to engage the nurdling. Anyone know what happened to Messrs Nudson and Fromping?

    Perhaps they're here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VcnbfHGPxT0&feature=search

However, I was wrong: picture 2 is part of a DB.
