    Jersey Cows

    Hi all

I am a keen metal detectorist and have permission to use a large amount of land near Stafford.  There are Jersey Cows on the land but if I go in a field where they are they always come running towards me as if charging, I stood my ground once but they just kept following me and the faster I walked so did they and if I ran they would.  Is this normal behaviour and could they mean me any harm?  Is there anything I can do to shoo them off and get them to leave me alone?

    Regards.

My advice is to stay out of the field. They are probably just inquisitive and have no intention of harming you.  Why not do your metal detecting in an empty field, I'm sure if they are milking cows they will be moved to fresh pasture in a few days, so go back then and do it.  A crowd of young cattle can be intimidating so the best advice is stay out, speak to the landowner, I'm sure he will allow you to detect on an alternative field.

hi don't mean to sound roude but if it was my land and i had given you permission to go on it i would expect you stay out while cows are in there, your obviously upsetting them by being there and potentially disturbing their grazing for the rest of that day maybe to them they see you as it is milking time and its time to go in,so maybe thats why they are following you there must be plenty of empty fields why pick one with cows in it?

    Re: Jersey Cows

    Hi

The field I was in was empty when I went in there, cows were let in later. there are quite a few fields where I go and I always head for the empty ones.  This particular field was a huge one and I didn't notice them come in until there were halfway across it as I was engrossed in what I was doing.  Once I noticed them I headed for the gate straight away and I managed to get there jjust as the cows got to me.  I always let the landowner know when I'm going on his land and always abide by his and the general rules.  I just simply wanted to know what the behaviour of cows were usually like and how to deal with them.

    Regards.
