John Deere, New Holland or Mccormick?

    Hi All,

I'm looking to buy a new tractor and am considering JD, NH or Mccormick. Looking at a 4 cylinder 120/130 hp for general farm jobs. Has anyone any experience with the new MC130? I can probably be sure the JD and NH are the better tractors but are the Mccormicks bad tractors for their money? A reasonable JD or NH is in the region of early to mid 40's where as the Mccormick is 36k.

     thanks,John

I have said this before but the mcormick is a good machine . No matter what anyone says they all go wrong . We run 2 mtx 150 on loaders and 1 has our student driving it and it stands up to any test  with flying colours. This includes hauling 26 bales of silage 20 miles+ every three days. Look beyond colour and cramped cabs . And for the money it will not let you down

Probably get most of that 10K back at the other end?

Down to a good local dealer, or lack off

Absolutely right there Mursal. A good dealer with the right attitude and backup is worth more than any badge or brand.

The 6 cyl mccormicks are pretty bullet-proof. Don't know about the smaller ones these days, the CX and MC ranges weren't brilliant

If your looking at a mccormick or NH, why not try landini or zetor? (on a level playing field, id say and cheaper). I also agree that a good dealer is of upmost most importance, without one its like having a baby without a mother and father! The thing that sets the JD apart is the residual value, although it will cost more to buy initially it will cost you less to run/hr on depreciation alone, not necessarily because its a better tractor but because there is a good market for them . Buy a Mcormick, Newholland etc and you might as well use your cash to light the fire. Im no JD fan but it often pays to buy what you know will hold its value and what the market wants. Its like buying a ranger or l200 over a hilux, they might all appear much the same, but come to sell it and you will wish you bought the toyota!

Dealer back up is the most important thing to consider within reason unless he goes onto some obscure foreign make that's constantly broken down & worth nowt when you come to sell it. Our dealer is as good as they get & i know if i break down at 9pm saturday night & ring him if he can't fix it over the phone he'll come out that night if it's desperate & will probably have the parts to fix it. That applies to both his tractors & the machinery he sells & there aren't many that carry the amount of parts that he does

Just have a quick look on ebay! ive got nothing against l200s but i can think of 6 or 7 locally that I know of, that have all done head gaskets. Its the same with the old d22's once they get a reputation the values drop right down, Im not saying a hilux is completely bullet proof but there is a strong demand for them so they hold their money and therefore a fairly sound investment as far as vehicles go.

At least it's now in a language which resembles english and not some form of scots-street-bling-text-speak!!!

Actually quite enjoying the input if not a little bit predictable!

See! I told you he wasn't all bad! And I'm even changing my opinion on Robsy, he too has sensible input now.

most of used John deeres in scotland came from england, you have to look at HRN's website to see that.

Good job we have a good sense of humour, or there would be trouble, regardless of how you spell it.

What part of Scotland, uncle Pat and the lads are over there at the minute?

Get a NH and get on, leave the Deeres, hopeless tractors, especially the new ones with the even more restricted engines and high fuel consumption.

Can I ask the original question again but put it in the context of having very limited dealer back-up. If I get back to operational farming again it will again be in a location where we will be 100-400K from a dealer's service point. The call-out charges get a little steep! The closest offical dealer is for Landini which is essentially the blue version of the McCormick.

    Stuart

in such circumstances I might consider buying 2 second hand Mc Cormicks instead of 1 new JD etc.

Re: John Deere, New Holland or Mccormick?

Peesie, on this issue I lament the loss of Doncaster - the lifespan of the 85 and 55 series says something for them. We have in the past gone with the full-chassis on the JD but I expect that if we do start again we will look at the used full-chassis McCormicks. The problem with the JD on the eastern market is the demand for JDs is putting the price through the roof. I do not think they sustain their value out here either, once they cross the border, they become 'tainted' and much harder to resell.
