    lambing feed buckets

i was wondering this year if i need to bother buying feed buckets for my ewes as they are rather expensive.

we feed the ewes on 18% nuts and they usually have a lifeline bucket as well.as the lifeline buckets are going to be £14+ i would like to try not using them and only feed them on the ewe nuts.

if anyone has any suggestions i would be gratefull

Mix some sugar beet nuts in with the cake for extra energy and good for the stomach too. Should do the same job !

We feed our multiples cake and hay, singles just hay (and maybe a tiny bit of cake), and all have normal mineral buckets. Never had a problem. Probably teaching you to suck eggs, but I assume the mollasses is not a cattle variety with copper? Just mentioning it because mine is and I have to keep reminding myself not to give it to the sheep!

    Re: lambing feed buckets

This past couple of years I have made buckets available (usually for about one day in three) and cut down the nuts. Like Kol, I minimise the hay to the doubles and triples so as to minimise rumen pressure on the lambs.

I use Lifeline and Rumenvite with fish oil.

I used to be feeding 1.5 lbs per ewe during the past week of pregnancy but now its around 0.5 lbs and with no noticeable difference to the lambs. In fact I think the ewes lamb just that little bit easier.

I do not feed sugar beet shreds until after lambing.
