    Net Security

In other threads there has been a lot of talk about social networking etc. Increasing use of the net inevitably means more attacks by those noxious people who try to make life more difficult for most of us.

This makes me wonder how others protect them selves from attacks and how they respond when their defences have been breached.

I have the full suite of McAfee tied in with my 'technical' support from BT but trojans and other bits and pieces still get through. To be fair BT techies always clear me up via their office in Inverness, but it can still be time consuming. For example I spent three hours yesterday evening clearing up a mess left my an infiltrator.

My machine now has on it. McAfee. plus free editions of four other programmes put there by BT to help me.

    How do others cope?

    Re: Net Security

    Hi Peter,

We use old kit whenever possible. XP with service pack 2 if we can.

Norton and sometimes McAfee slow the system down to much on the older hardware. So we bined the lot.

     But we do the following:

    1. Always use Firefox as our browser. Uninstall Internet Explorer if you can as it's like a magnet for trojans Junk, etc. Firefox 4 seems OK, but 3.6.2 is rock solid

Firefox has some nice add ons (sometimes called plugins) that make life easier. Spell Checker (which I rely on too much), Add Blocker to stop adverts on sites, just by clicking the block button, Proxy server to allow BBC iPlayer to be viewed outside the UK. And all downloads are complete, Internet Explorer can leave out certain files. And many more

Note: If your BT technician uses a pacemaker, when you mention Firefox watch for the jolt!

    2. Never leave your history stored on the browser, switch off all history before you use the browser for the first time

    3. Do a disk clean of the C: drive at lease once a week

    4. Run a trojan killer now and then (can't remember the name), but you probably have one in your bundle.

    5.  Use all software provided by your bank for internet security

    6. Have dedicated bank accounts for internet usage

    7. PayPal whenever possible

    8. Get into the loop of software maintenance don't just hand the controls to someone else (BT). Although hard, well worth it in the long run.

This works for us, may not do the job for everyone

There is an industry setup around the fear we have connecting to the internet. You might argue that it is worst than the disease.

    Re: Net Security

Thanks Mursal. I too tend to use the technology just before the one in fashion for the reasons of technical stability and security. These folks who put trojans and viruses in your machines however, are a pain in the 'ars*'

If I had my way I would lock them in a room with an Amstrad Computer with only Locoscript on it, and not allow them to come out until they had written a t million word apology and reasons why they would never again conduct such activities.

    All the best.

    Re: Net Security

I think these security programs purposely put on viruses if you don't pay up in time to get you to renew with them. Then they show you how clever they are at clearing them. (Having kept your computer clear for a year).

Then they behave like the spray suppliers: there is always a particular weed that won't be killed so you have to add in another litre of this or that to clean up the field. - There is always a computer attack which your present program will not handle, so you should up date with another £35 update.

When in Rome, do as the Romans do.

My brother recommended AVG which l pay for.

l trust his judgement, he runs an IT section for a major bank and has staff under him all over the world, so must have a bit of knowledge, even if he is my 'little' brother!

I just use a Mac running nothing. Don't get anything at all. Nothing to slow the machine down which makes a hell of a difference.
