    New Holland fuel gauge light

I have a New Holland t6020 which has a intermittent fuel gauge fault. When driving along on the road the fuel gauge `low warning light` comes on generally when the tractor hits a bump on the road. The diesel tank is full and when the light `low warning light` comes on the fuel gauge neddle drops down to about half full and then goes back up to full and then the light goes off. The tractor runs perfect but the problem is a bit annoying.

Bad connection, probably on the tank connection plug. If you get someone to sit in the cab watching the light, and as Bovril says "do a wiggle test" on the wiring loom to find the bad connection.

If the 'wiggle test' does not work then it could possibly be the sender unit on top of the tank. it is located on the top of the lower section of the tank behind the steps. on the sender unit is a float which may have developed a leak which would allow diesel into it therefore making it heavier eg not moving as it should as you go over bumps. if the float does not have diesel inside it then the rod which the float is attached to will have an electrical contact on the opposite end. given time this contact will get mucky and prevent an accurate reading of the position of the float. the units work by measuring the level of resistance through the connection which determines the position of the float and how much diesel is inside the tank. hope this helps Sam

Well I got a chance to have a look in around the fuel tank today,my brother was there and he noticed that the wire going to the fuel gauge in the tank was stretched due to bad assembley. Transmission flexi hoses were laid over the wire and caused it to stretch at the tank connector. I removed the connection from the tank and re-routed it over the transmission pipes. Used tractor for the remaining half day and no problrms. All sorted, thanks for the replies.
