Farmers need to kill all moles, rabbits, deer, foxes, pigeons, beetles, bugs, spiders, just to survive............

Why do farmers need to kill all, moles, rabbits, deer, foxes, pigeons, beetle, bugs, spiders to survive?

It must be a countryside thing.............................or is it?

No, suburban gardeners are much more efficient in destroying everything that deflects from their ideal, and they are not accountable as far as how much herbicide or insecticide they use, or at what concentration!

I have always held conservation high in the planning of  all aspects of my farming activities both on my farm in Africa, and as a manager here in the UK.

    ooops:
Why do farmers need to kill all,
............  In the way the question is put, they don't and most probably do not even try to do so. Most farmers, and countrymen/women I know are happy to live in a controlled harmony with other creatures. As has been said by another correspondent, it is the urban mind that is intolerant of 'unwanted' creatures in their outdoor space. The same probably does for the indoor space too. Countryfolk tend to be happy to live with other creatures in their outdoor and indoor spaces.

There seems to be a lot more moles about this year than most of the locals can ever recall, possibly down to two very wet years. Also rabbits (must have a word with our chief mouser as baby rabbits are about his speed). We are not arable so the pigeons, beetles, bugs and spiders can have carte blanche.

I don't think it's about killing all pests, just keeping their numbers under control particularly foxes which have had more than their fair share of our hens this winter.

    Ah so...these creatures are pests.

Who are they a pest too, it can only be the farmer.

It's a good job he knows how to kill them.

    Why let the creatures live?

    Farmers don't kill badgers..........that's illegal.

Or do they kill badgers and say it was someone else?

I think it's a beautiful, beautiful thing that we can live in balanced harmony with all Gods creatures, including Trolls.

It is of course nesseccary to control certain species when they begin to effect an excessive influence upon their environment, that also includes Trolls.

Farmers kill moles because if you cut silage in a field with mole hills in it it causes listeriosis in the livestock that eat it , which can kill them or make them abort .

They kill rabbits because they eat grass that is meant for the sheep and cattle

Pigeons destroy arable crops when they come through the ground .

If you have a big population of foxes at lambing time you will loose lambs to them.

Can’t think of a reason to kill a spider other than to make it rain .

There is reasoning in what you perceive as the madness , to produce food !

    We only kill:

Moles when dad accidentally runs them over,

Rabbits only when they have mixi in the summer,

Foxes because they EAT and KILL OUR chickens,

Pigeons because they are pests and taste good,

Bugs with a bug zapper because we have a horse thats allergic to insect bites.

    Does this answer your question?

Well oops, You have your answer to each species including spiders. Maybe you would now like you now to explain, if you can, why non-farmers also kill most of the species you originally listed. You may wish to restrict your answers to moles, rabbits, pidgeons, beetles and spiders.

Does Ooops realise that land owners are legally required to control the rabbit population on their land? Perhaps Ooops would like to sugest a way of keeping within this law that doesn't involve killing them. Should we all ask them politely to leave for example?

May I ask if Ooops uses mouse traps in his / her house? Rat poison? Fly spray or a fly swatter? How about flea spray or ant powder? I presume Ooops uses Detox or something similar on his / her work surfaces... Does Ooops realise that he / she is murdering countless thousands of bacteria? Harmless bacteria! Nice bacteria!

    THINK OF THE BACTERIA!!!!!!!!

I can think of another "pest" that's invading the countryside on a daily basis... can anyone guess what it is???

Let animal kill animal, not man kill animal, even if it's a pest.

A Falcon will rid you of the pidgeons, the Fox will keep the Rabbit and Mole under control, a bit extream, but the only animal that will control deer, is a wolf. This will keep the Deer (and possible Fox) population under control, Owls will keep mice, rats and rodents under control. Let the bugs live and these feed the farm birds, which in turn, these birds will eat the seeds of weeds and dead flowers.

    Well said!

Oops; when you say 'let animal kill animal...the foxes will keep down the rabbits and moles.'

We can't have foxes on our land because THEY KILL OUR CHICKENS!!!!!

What is your solution to this problem!?!?!

Can you bear to see 5 chickens left to die by the fox? Can you bear to see them with wings and legs missing wear the fox has torn them off?

So if you are introducing wolves to keep deer and fox populations under control what is going to stop the wolves taking every species of domesticated livestock ( and i mean everything, cattle, sheep, horses, lammas, e.t.c.). This will also possibly endanger human lives, causing laws to be changed so that people are allowed to carry firearms for personal safety.

To keep the fox out, why not try and build high strong fence, that's built into the ground, encircling the chicken areas and have the coups high off the ground.

There's a product called 'Scoot' that'll get rid of foxes. One sprays it on the grass. Harmless to wildlife and the odour is disliked the fox. The down side is the odour is a very strong smell.

Another deterrant is the human. Just to be active, produce noise, walk around, have a pet dog on site........good luck

Another way instead of using the wolf, but it's expensie, is to use powerful ultrasonic noise repellants and electric fences.

The wolf was the extream measure.............the wolf will work, but a bit dangerous to human and other wildlife.

The human has to live, to protect earth and its wildlife.......no one else on this planet can protect the wildlfe, only the human.

It can be an ideal world, living in harmanoy with wildlife and nature.

Remember it's the only thing thats free in this life...............and that's nature and wildlife.

    Don't destroy it.

Good Luck, its in the your hands, land owners and farmers.
