I'm just up the road from Tiptree, and I don't think I know this John Smith, and if he's talking in roman numerals, frankly I wouldn't believe those yields if they were t/ha on those gravelly soils up there!!!!!

And Jules, may I start reminiscing about some tales of Young Farmers and Batchelors from your murky past?

The more honest people are the better. We need to hear about the problem crops as much as the good ones.

Nobody likes to admit to a bad crop, it doesn't matter if you are east of the Atlantic or west of it.  In the UK, do people tend to round their yields up or down???  For example, you pull into a field of wheat, it makes 31 bushels to the acre.  Most farmers will tell their wives and landlords it made 25(see, I have no money for home improvement or more rent) but they will tell their neighbors it made 40(I am just so much better at farming than you are).

Since I cannot edit my posts, still, just a note to my wife, who I know sometimes reads them.  OTHER farmers lie to their wives, not me, our wheat really wasn't very good, and I don't have any money to add onto the house right now, maybe after soybean harvest.

I think most round upwards. But I would urge people to be honest. Much more useful in identifying trends on variety etc

I tar yield liars and margin liars with the same brush. That brush being the brush of lies.

Started Winter Barley here (South West UK) on Wednesday 15th.

Due to the totally extortionate cost of PK and N, ploughshares and diesel, last year's cost of production of £80/tonne was thought to have increased to £115/tonne.

Sale price of barley hereabouts is now £80/tonne. Last year it was £115/tonne.

Thursday/Friday we had a month's rainfall with the associated gales reducing yields by about 20% (ie cost of production now risen to £143.75/tonne).

'nuff to drive one to drink.

    Cheers!(6X)Embarrassed

42 million acres winter wheat planted fall 2008 in USA, 9 million in Kansas.  8.16 million harvested(estimated) for a yield of 360.8 million bushels total(9.66 million 2240 pound UK tons), or an average yield of 1.18 tons per acre,  based on early Kansas Department of Ag statistics estimates.

For your information, local cash grain bids.  Corn(maize) $2.88 bushel($115.20 ton), Soybeans $10.18 bushel($380.05), new crop soybeans $8.53(318.45), wheat $4.99(186.29), Milo(grain sorghum) $2.61(104.4).  Bushel weights, wheat, soybeans 60 pounds, milo, corn, 56 pounds, barley 48 pounds, oats 32 pounds.  No price on barley or oats locally, not enough is raised.  Most barley is cut for silage in Kansas, most oats hayed, nearly all the barley and oats grown in Kansas is used by the grower in their livestock operations hardly any would be sold.

Re: Harvest 2009 text messages to 07786 200147

We seem to be missing most of the rain on the East coast here, I've been baling hay every day except Friday. On that subject I reckon grass yields are down anything up to 50%, but established clover and lucerne yields holding up well. We keep hearing there is a bumper hay crop in Wales and the West country. Is that right? On the subject of ;ules, I'm going to have to ration the tales as he was actually such a goody two shoes there are limited stories. He was best at taking the mickey out of others!!! I have one or two things for later though!

Cut a little bit more today before it rained yet again. Wettest July here since 2008.

Can't get a reading straight off the combine on my 1947 Marconi, but off the drier it's about 22.5%.
