    Lambing Placement

I am a student at the RVC in London and I am looking for a lambing placement in Scotland, preferably in the North East (Aberdeen, Aberdeenshire). I have had trouble finding a placement which:

    A) Has enough breeding ewes (I need 200)

    B) Can take on students. I am not looking for payment at all and will not need accomodation as I can stay with family (in Portlethen) and commute

and C) will be lambing between the 5th of March and the 26th of April.

Does anyone know the ideal to advertise?

Any help would be much appreciated. Thank you.

If you can't find anything local would you consider coming to Wales for lambing ? We lamb from end of Feb to mid April. 2000 ewes mainly indoors and we have a static caravan for accommodation. Meals provided ( If you get on with the missus ).

Hi there, thank you so much for your quick reply.  I would consider anything to be honest and appreciate the offer.

I am a graduate student on the accelerated course. My first degree is in Equine Science which I completed at the University of Aberdeen. I only have two days of lambing experience so far but in Febuary I'll have completed classes in Lambing preparation and lamb care.

I have completed pigs, diary and equine work experience so I can provide references.

Would you be looking for someone to stay with you throughout the entrie lambing period?

Thank you so much for your reply, I really appreciate it.

    Kester,

I have a document with lambing placements available, it's from the national sheep association. PM me your e-mail address and I will e-mail it to you.

I am 25 and on the graduate course at the RVC so feel free to ask me anything about the application process etc. I was interviewed at Nottingham, Cambridge and the RVC so I can give you advice and help with personal statement.

Let me know if you are looking to get other work experience and I can see what I can do for you. Vet schools prefer diversity rather than someone with 10yrs or so on one animal group (horses in my case).

     Hello Welshnwilling,

You seem like the person to email with regards to lambing experience! Do you still need people?

I am a 25 year old vet anatomy teacher at Bristol, and I'm hoping to apply to a graduate veterinary science course in september. I admittedly don't have any lambing experience, but I grew up on a dairy farm and I've helped calve quite a few cows (obviously not the best experience for lambing, but at least it means I'm not squeamish!). I have always wanted to do lambing, so it would be wonderful to get some experience. Do you perhaps have a spare week when you're short of volunteers? I finish teaching and am free for a week or 5 days any time after March 17th.

    With best wishes

    Sarah

Hi Sarah, sorry but I already have enough helpers for this season. If I was you I'd start another thread on here perhaps, and also get in touch with the NSA ( national sheep association ) Good luck.

@Sarah -my plan B was the WWOOFing Network, which is a global network for coordinating volunteer work for board and lodging on (officially/mostly) organic farms, mostly small farms, but there are some in the booklet I've got in Wales that have got several hundred ewes. http://www.wwoof.org/ The people involved tend to be mainly the more practical-minded variety of hippies, so probably quite nice to work for too. My friends have gone round Scotland for weeks doing WWOOFing. You can search the database for free, but the contact details on each ad only become visible after you pay 20 quid membership

    Re: Lambing Placement

p.s. to EVERYONE -I also recommend being much more careful with hygiene than I was, because I got a really bad gut infection with explosive D&V, fever and painful bloating, and became so ill the farmer sent me home after five days when I'd meant to stay 10 days. I'm back home recovering still. It's really hard to actually avoid contamination when you're eating and drinking because it's not just your hands that get mucky, you'll be mostly covered all over, but with hindsight I can say for certain it's worth trying harder than I did to disinfect your hands and keep them clean before eating or drinking, or wiping your eyes or nose. To some extent tho, it may be just a matter of needing to get sick to become immune.
