    Rare breeds prices

Do any other areas have rare breed sales? Our autumn one was today and I was expecting relatively low prices due to the time of year and the state of the economy however I had to stop a friend bidding over 60 for a trio of Rhode Island Reds, I believe they went for £75 and that wasnt unusual! I used to attend in a professional capacity but havent been for a few years and I was shocked at the prices.

Salisbury market have monthly rare breed sales. Prices are high here. The best places I can think of are Cirencester or Hereford markets. The prices here aren't too bad, but then at these sales you get a wide range of birds & not always top quality.

Not sure where you are in the country, countryegggirl, but there is a massive rare breeds dispersal sale this weekend in Shropshire. As our story explains, the Wernlas Collection will be going under the hammer on Saturday (3 Sept). Poultry World will be reporting on the event in the next (October)issue. Im up in Aberdeenshire and was just curious if our prices wee artificially high due to our geographical location and lack of competition. Will look forward to reading the results of Saturdays sale and wish I was closer!

Prices at Ross were a bit dissapointing. A couple of nice Buff orpingtons went for £40. Interestingly single hens were getting better prices than pairs. We had a nice pair of Lemon Faverolles go for £10 when a single hen went for £27!

There was an article in the Daily Telegraph property section a few months back where someone was selling his imposing house and bit of land for a small fortune, and he was making 35k a year selling trios of chocolate orpingtons or something, chocolate somethings can't remember what exactly, but they were fetching something like £75 a go. Couldn't believe it. I'm in the wrong business obviously.
