    Red Mites

    Hi

I have got loads of really usefull information from previous threads, however one thing is baffaling me!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! how do you suddenly get Red Mites???????????

I've had my chickens for nearly three years, and have never had any mites before this.

About six monts ago we moved to a little village where my chickens live in an area which is penned off, our neighbours have freely told us that two of their hen houses have Red Mites, their chickens are free range and go down to our chicken pen!!!

We have just lost three Silkie chicks which were crawling with the mites, so quite naffed off could they have brought them down to us? Our hens are not going into the hen house with their chicks not even in the rain. This I belive is due to the Red Mites........

Going to blitz to chicken pen tomorrow but what do i do about my broody hen with the eggs she's sitting on that are about to pip any day?????

Can someone please help me I feel really guilty and hacked off?!?!?!?!?

Harsh, but tell your neighbours you do not want their foul fowl visiting yours. Or make sure that any strays meet with an accident.

A thorough cleaning and treatment of your housing (with whatever is legal in the UK these days) will help. As for the broody, anything you do is better than nothing. Depending on how quiet she is, dusting, or an oil based treatment will help. Same goes for the mewly-hatched.
