Ive been looking at s/h mf 31xp with 2000hrs, do not have any experience of massey combines, are ther many pitfalls with them? If so would be glad of any advice! Only have 140 acres to cut.

I was always told to avoid the MF 27/29/31 combines. They are of a monocoque design rather than having a chassis, and in the long term this leads to fatigue in a lot of parts which need the rigidity.

On the plus side they are cheap to buy, and you will always find some machines which have been very reliable for people, there just don't seem to be many of them!

sounds like a good combine if its come from a good home should be no problem.

the only thing to check is the countershaft bearings.the only down side to these combines is they are ar** to work on when they do go wrong

Thanks for youre help, i think i will try and get a fresher mf maybe a 34 or 36, the powerflow head is the main attraction for osr, and they dont seem as expensive as some other makes.

I like the 32/34/36 range. Only drawback is that the electronics are built in, you can't just switch off a monitor and carry on like an older machine when something electrical goes wrong. I nearly bought a MF26 a few months ago. That looked ideal, simple and basic. Not many of them about though.
