I wouldn't be convinced on that going on the test with the double artic trailer from last year, and if you notice the lorries that have caravans or similar behind them, they're all ridged bodied lorries, or the ones i have seen. May be wrong be thats my views, and you'd also be tight on towing limits??

well i was thinking more a trailer that can take a load... then behind it tow a wheeled machine as it were... something that cant take a load e.g. a genny or chipper.

only thinking about it because its perfectly legal agriculturally... and some trailers do have tow hitches, all the NATO ones do....

We tow a 7'x4' trailer to carry the quad behind a Land Rover and stock trailer. Doubt very much if it's legal, we only use it very locally. The stock trailer is usually over-weight on it's own.

thing is the towing weight is (how i would put it) what is being pulled by the towbar (empty trailer + load), so it'd all contribute (trailer + load +genny/chipper). I know Daihatsu Fourtraks are 3.5T towing capacity and 6/6.5T train weight (vehicle and trailer) and fourtraks have one of the highest towing capacities. Alot of other vehicles are not as high with the towing capacity.

yea, so a chipper weighs 750kg

    my empty trailer weighs   300kg

    my towing capacity's      3500kg

    leaving me with chippings 2450kg

think im all good weight wise....just the fact weather i can tow 2 trailers.... i mean dollies are legal... same principle... so why not.

I know you can't tow two loaded trailers, one must be empty. I'm not sure how that applies to a loaded trailer and a towed implement, but I think it's ok behind a tractor.

You can't tow a car behind a tractor/forager. Our contractor got pulled over for doing this, one of his drivers had to drive the car to it's destination....funny thing was, it had a tank full of cherryade which went undectedWink

It's to do with towing a road going vehicle with a machine running on red diesel

did not know that..... is that just using an A-frame or dolly... or does trailering a vehicle count as well ?

as i chuck my truck or a car on a trailer behind a tractor all the time

    Re: tadam trailers behind 4x4's

I didn't know that about towing cars, but it makes sense. I know someone who had a lorry on an agricultural tax disc (and red diesel) siezed and impounded for carrying a van on the deck of a trailer they were towing. He told me that he was legal to travel 400 miles to collect a dismantled farm shed, but carrying the van to get to digs while they took it down was illegal as it was for private use.

Most of the time the police aren't bothered, around here anyway, but if they get a bee in their bonnet or customs and excise get involved then there are so may obscure rules that there's not a lot we do that is completely legal!!

    Re: tadam trailers behind 4x4's

Our local cops had a bit of a blitz a couple of years ago, they impounded a broken down lorry and the tractor that was towing it back to the contractors yard. They then started taking an interest in tractors with dump trailers or low loaders working on building sites.

One contractor had been warned but carried on carrying rubble out of a site in town. He got stopped again and told the copper "do you know I play golf with your boss ?" the copper said "I don't give a s##t who you play golf with !" and threw the book at him and now they watch everybody like hawks. This has made things difficult for some contractors as this type of work kept them going through the winter when the ground was too wet to work on.

But any weight in the second trailer will be putting an upward pull on the ball hitch of the first. I think this is illegal? There has to be a minimum weight on the tow bar of the towing vehicle at all times? It may be a percentage of the overall weight of the trailer.

never heard of a minimum nose weight....

if your on leaf sprung truck it tows oh so lovly with a nice bit of weight on the truck...

but alott of caravans are balanced and so hardly any nose weight, thats one reason their so cr-ap at towing and like to snake and flip (:

The simple answer to this question is no you cannot tow two trailers together. The biggest problems are the overrun brakes

well im completely building my next truck from ground up and its having air brakes, with a rear aux and also a hydraulic spool.... so now if they're not on over-run brakes ?

and i was talking about if the rear trailer was unbraked anyway

If i remember right, it may not be illegal to do this but you restrict yourself to something like 18M.P.H as it becomes a caravan(not the living in sort), So kinda defeats the objec,t why not just get a bigger trailer and mount chipper onboard :)
