The Government and the future of farming in the UK

The question is our government obviously does not want farmers in the long run BUT as the government could potentially change every 4 years do the EU? because these are the people that will decide our long term futures. The farmers in other European countries, such as Germany, are also in the same boat as us, so is the EU's long term objective to move all food production out of Europe so that it can be bought in from South America? or Asia? at a cheaper price? If this is all to happen then why are big companies such as ICI, Dalgety and machinery companies such as Deere and Agco spending lots of money on UK agriculture by promoting their services to the industry? Also what about the banks that provide finance to the farms? Are they thinking the outstanding loans will be paid off by the SFP/ELS/HLS monies recieved over then next few years, until 2012 when who knows what will happen, because if all payments are ceased and there is no point farming, the value of the land will surely decrease. The only option would be to split all the land up into smaller plots for city folk to purchase and build their 'country homes!' on.

What else do you expect from a system that requires our government to be re-elected every 4yrs or so? They are looking towards the next one as soon as they have fought the last. What hope has agriculture when the average government lasts about as long as a good rotation. Like you said its the EU where most of our policy comes from but our beurocrats/politicians that gold plate it...

The banks will own the land and then be able to sell it on to the house builders. Joyce
