The joys (and nightmares!) of pet ownership

I guess forum users are probably dog lovers more than cat fans - but all pets are expensive. I've certainly found this out having recently got two kittens. They're gorgeous - but the vet is going have a good holiday next year after what I've paid him!

I'm hoping I'm not alone in having faced big, unexpected vets bills.

Our old Border Collie went down with pancreatitis last year, it cost the best part of £500 to put her right!

Re: The joys (and nightmares!) of pet ownership

We have two cats. One is super-intelligent and active and always in good health.

Her daughter, on the other hand, is allergic to everything, has an insatiable appetite, consquent weight problems and probably has severe psychological issues too due to the unrequited love she has for her mother.

Last month her kidneys failed resulting in a night spent at the vet.

Vet bills so far this year? Probably getting on for £1,000.

    Worth it?

    Every penny.

My mum, who's not a fan of cats or dogs, used to tell me I could have one once I had a house of my own. But now I do have my own place I don't think I could afford it, especially if the vet bills were as huge as yours!

One report reckons the average cat costs £7200 over its lifetime, while dogs cost about £9000. Apparently there are ways to cut the costs of owning a pet, but now you've got into the habit of feeding them M&S chicken it may be too late for you Tim!
