The wheat pendulum has swung again.

From the lows of 18 months ago, to the highs of £200 last October when fertiliser was still reasonable, and now to £110 per ton with Nitrogen £400 per ton and triple super £700 per ton. The 60 acres I ploughed up for wheat last autumn is now earmarked for a clover ley. The extra 150 acres that was going to be ploughed up this autumn will remain pasture.  It seems bizarre that a few weeks ago a downing street summit was calling for increased food production and cheaper food. Now I hear that one farmer is going to leave 1000 acres fallow because he can make no money growing crops.

This will be interesting come rent review time for the tenant farmers.

earlier this year landlords were pushing for £80/acre rents in some areas (up from £55/acre or less in some cases) I don't think many rents will have been settled as I think most will be March next year.

Surely this will mean that there will be little / no increase now? What do others think?

Landlords over here still mumbling about needing more rent.  The grain markets just continue to plummet, and inputs climb higher daily.  You name it, it costs more, right down to the postage stamp to mail your payments out.  I don't know what triple super is, but DAP is now $1125 a ton, up from $765 when I planted corn.  For years in my farming career it has been $200-$240.  This could get really bad really fast.
