    Transgenic hens

As reported in today's Farmers Weekly, Scottish researchers have created the world's first genetically modified hen capable of laying eggs that can be used to fight cancer and other horrible diseases in people.

I can see the benefits of having flocks of hens producing low-cost raw materials for drugs that save many lives. Many of the charities (Cancer Research, Multiple Sclerosis to name a few) are delighted with the advance.

But to wider poultry farmers, I fear it’s not such a positive story coming so soon after the "clone calf" hype by the Daily Mail. It is just more ammunition for those against poultry farming. Or am I wrong, does the future indeed lie in GM?

I do not know how the poultry farmers will view this form of GM technology?

In my opinion, GM is a good idea that should be developed, the thought of using it to cure cancer is great news.

As always the anti's will reject it, without giving it a chance. So much for progress!

The antis will reject this as it does not fit their twisted "animal rights" agenda. I think it is excellent, we are starting to see real benefits from biotechnology and we need to get on and use it!
