Two a day to quit milk industry

Dairy farmers' confidence in the milk industry has slipped with 13% planning to quit, according to the 2011 DairyCo Farmer Intentions Survey.

That was a 4% increase in the number expecting to leave when compared with last year's survey results.

Only 31% of farmers expected to increase production, against 35% last year, with just over half likely to maintain production at current levels.

Are you one of those planning to leave the industry? Or perhaps you are bucking the trend and believe things can only get better.

No, we're not quitting but I do believe we have an oversupply of milk in this country and that needs to be addressed.

an over supply of milk? your having a laugh right?

global demand is high and i know its only a forecast but that forecast consistantly tells us of increasing demand, we on the western/northern edge of europe with a warming gulf stream in one of the world best grass growing areas. uk industry needs to get off it laurels and get out into world markets and sell to them. with a little pointing in the right direction from farm to processor level should be giving the irish a run for their money instead of letting them and the kiwis divide up world markets between them. but hey if you all want to take the foot off the gas and leave it to us thats all the better for us!

I agree with you AyrshireBull the problem is the intermideur ,they tell you what you will be paid, you have no choise they are making about 40% markup on our work. What other industry in the world as big as farming lets the buyer tell them what they will pay ,it should be we want (sufficient to pay the bills and able to live and invest). its about time the prossesors follow our needs , stop importing milk from abroad  , if the producers stopped the suply for a week they would have to listen i could go on but i don't have to tell you the problems etc.

United we stand, divided we fall.  And the UK dairy industry is crashing down around us at the moment.  At the moment farming is a big industry made up of many small individuals all determined to out do their neighbour, try a bit of teamwork and we may get somewhere.
