Vertical axis (micro generation) wind turbines

I've come across a number of companies, during 2010, making and selling these in the US

The 'blades' rotate around the vertical axis of the mast, unlike traditional wind turbines which rotate around a horizontal axis.

Vertical axis turbines should cause fewer problems with bird-strikes, blade noise etc., be less visually obtrusive (important when seeking planning permission), and have fewer gearbox problems.

But, does anyone have any UK experience of them?

A company near me developed one before they went bust.  Their machine spun well but don't know how much it generated.

Watched a Grand Designs progamme were a couple built a "Green" house and put up avertical axis turbine.  Kevin McCloud revisited them a year later and despite bearing, motors and stuff being replaced it still hadn't worked at all sucessfully.

My advice would be buy a Proven.  More power and no hassle!!!

I have not seen any for sale.

But one of the guys doing his masters in Wind Energy designed one from scratch. He used a 3-phase generator sourced from E-Bay and found it to be "notchy" (not smooth enough). The turbine wasn't able to turn the generator and unfortunately he did not proceed to iron out the problems.

It was indeed a very impressive design with all the advantages you mentioned and more.

There was a firm selling them at LAMMA two years ago. They seemed a very good idea, but I didn't look into it any further as East Anglia Development funding are the only ones in the country who don't support small scale on-farm wind turbines. My view was that as anything like that is priced up to the subsidy available, (dread the thought the farmer might get some of it!) I would end up paying over the odds.

I found a link to the programme I mentioned last night on this web.    http://www.skyrota.com/blog/?p=38

    It wasn't a great advert!!

... and I see the blog post about Grand Designs was the last one (April 2009) ... also not a good advert!

    Thanks for the link, Phil.

Hi all, We as a company have much experience dealing with the VAWT turbines. We have installed a number of them across the UK both on the ground and on rooftops. If it's something you may be interested in we'd be pleased to provide you with some information. Just get in touch via the email below. The gallery on our website provides a few images of said turbines, too. You will find them on the Ashenden House link on our Past Projects page. Regards, Jordan

Hi, there are pros as well as cons to Vertical Axis Wind Turbines and the associated technology. They work in the right application and if you pick the right manufacturer, they offer a reasonable rate of return, and a lifetime of over 20 years. There are only really two VAWT manufacturers any where near MCS, the standard making the turbines eligible for feed in tariffs. Quiet Revolution recently achieved MCS with their QR5 and Urban Green Energy's 1kW and 4kW turbines are currently in process. Urban Green Energy's range also includes hybrids off-grid street and pathway lighting. Their systems are available in a range of configurations and colours. www.urbangreenenergy.com www.quietrevolution.com
