WANTED! FARMERS WHO HAVE GIVEN UP THE CITY JOB FOR FARM LIFE

BETTY are making a new series for BBC Three about people with shopping addictions that want to change their ways in a bid to pursue their dreams. In the fourth and final episode of the series, our contributor dreams of a life in Australia living and working on a farm – with the option of a farm stay facility or public shop and even a clay pigeon shooting ground.  We want to give our contributor a taste of the life they dream of by experiencing life on a farm in the South-East of England, where she can speak to someone who has done what she dreams of doing – leaving the City job behind and starting a new life in the country and setting up a farm. Whatever their situation, if you know of someone that has left the City behind to pursue their farming dream please do get in touch.      That's a fair reaction but misguided I think.  If people from cities really do want to farm, and make a decent try at it (realistically probably smallholding rather than full-time farming) they'll find how much hard work, skill and knowledge it requires.  Assuming they keep some contact with their city friends, passing on this information by word of mouth is very much to the advantage of farmers and the countryside: the overriding problem we have at the moment is that most of the population are woefully ignorant of the countyside, and get most of their information from animal rights pressure groups, Georgina Downes clones etc. who the BBC seem to love.

Some in the present government have an agenda of trying to destroy farming in England as revenge for Margaret Thatcher destroying coal mining.  However, I think the more common reason for their apalling handling of countryside matters is pure and simple ignorance.  Eliot Morley comes to mind as a rather unpleasant example who has recently got his come-uppance, and while I don't have any personal gripe with Jane Kennedy, she must be about as ignorant of farming and the countryside as it's possible to be, and even if she learns fast, she will probably be fed lies and propaganda by various urban based organisations.

I agree with this as it is better to have sympathetic friends than antagonistic enemies. The more we share our way of life and the ethics and practices behind it the more we will get good will and positive press.

As far as the countryside is concerned, ignorance is not bliss. Every city dweller already has an 'image' of the countryside in his/her mind and the more positive and realistic we can help this to become the better.
