What do you make of this kind of advertising?

The Potato Council is running a new marketing campaign to highlight that spuds are nutritionally great and good value for money. As part of it , it has recruited model Nell McAndrew to pose for pictures. It says: "The stunning photographs of Nell, who regularly eats potatoes, are designed to highlight to consumers that the dishes our grandparents used to cook were healthy, nutritious and easy on the wallet as well as the waistline."

Personally, I find it a bit cheesy (and I'm no prude) but I suppose it gets column inches in the national papers. Here's the picture:

Which is why I like Flowerdrum slogan  FWi - Fun With Isabel and a picture of you drapped with strategic copies of FW to save any embarassment.

    As to the picture:

I do wish the wife wouldn't do this sort of thing anymore. I have told her that I can keep her in the manner to which she has become accustomed..

Well done Mrs Wells I say..

Alberta Beef tried this 7 years ago, albeit in a Canadian kinda way.

    Quite successful by all accounts.

I'm still awaiting the FWi pin-up calendar.  Then we can check out how much time Isabel's been spending in the gym ...

I went this morning. But I still have more in common with the potatoes above than Nell!

Re: What do you make of this kind of advertising?

I went onto the Potato Council website and looked up the press release this came from.  I can now see the reason for Nell's forties hairstyle and lipstick, and the significance of the tin bath and hessian sacks - harking back to WW2 diets.

The most interesting thing though is the invitation at the end to contact them to arrange an interview with Nell or with their tame potato historian.  I somehow think Nell will win out in the popularity stakes!

I always cringe my *** off at these type of adverts. Nell McAndrew lying on a load of Maris Pipers aint going to get me to encourage me to put them in the basket next time I'm at the greengrocers!

It isn't supposed to.  It's not an advert, it's a photo sent out with press release extolling the virtues of spuds in a healthy diet and inviting journalists to arrange an interview with Nell McAndrew and/or the Potato Council's boffin.  The expectation being, presumably, that the media will give free publicityin exchange for use of the picture and interviews.

Incidentally, being a rainy day,l  googled Nell McAndrew and found her website.  She apparently publishes her own fitness videos and runs marathons - hence the shoulders, Isabel.

I know Isabel called it a cheesy pic, but in the cringe making stakes, it is easily topped by the execrable Beefy and Lamby adverts!

Mrs. Wells is going to sell alot more tatties than if Ally, Markw or myself was lying in them dressed like that, can't speak for Peter though as I have not seen a pic of him.  How do you know they are Maris Pipers??

Nell McAndrew makes an ideal pin-up for british food and farming, sexy, healthy, honest, down to earth and dare i say simple!  Just the message british farming should be putting across.  EBLEX could do worse than to scrap beefy and lamby and follow suit. Not literally of course, as i'm not sure draping a sexy model over a heap of lamb chops would be quite as effective!

I think that it is a great picture to go with a press release. Lets hope that it has the desired effect.

So maybe she has well developed shoulders?............Lying on your back lobbing spuds is bound to develop some shoulder muscle.Wink

Those who say it cannot be done, should not interrupt the person doing it.

Don't think the people who actually purchase potatoes (mostly women I suspect)  will be much influenced by this advert.

Right there, lizzyno. but as it's aimed at marketing (mostly blokes, probably) it's sure to raise a few eyebrows! How about a male model advertising British pork, yum! ( I've just realised what I've put, I mean pork from pigs! Wink)

    Not every day is baaaaad.....

Crazysheep - Do you look at the picture and think "must have spuds for tea tonight"? I doubt it.  I dont really care about the ad but doubt that it will sell more potoatoes.

It's not an ad, it's a press release aimed at journalists and extolling the virtues of potatoes.  Its job is to entice journalists into using the information in the release to write articles favourable to potatoes or to contact the Potato Council to arrange interviews to get more information, then write favourable articles.
