what do you want your contractor to do?

I am thinking of starting a agricultural contracting business, and i would like to hear your thoughts on  what you think i could do, maybe things that your current contractor doesn't do, or things you would like to see improved.

    any comments/ advice please

     thanks matt

Dont do what everyone else does already for peanuts:

Every man and his dog ploughs and bales, and thats why the rates are so low. Its great having a steady supply of eager farmers' sons who are happy to plough for next to nothing.

Do things that make you stand out:

Mole ploughing is good as few people offer it, and those who do charge crazy rates. How about swathing? Spraying off rape is the cool thing, but it wont be once a) roundup resistance in weeds is widespread or b) GM rape come available. Drain jetting and ditching to keep you busy over winter. All the above kit, except the crawler to pull the mole, is fairly inexpensive.

Take the dough and stay real jiggy.
    Uh-huh.

The first thing to do is get a good overdraft facility with t he bank, because you'll need it. A set of golf clubs, because you'll know the bank manager that well you will be expecting an invite to the annual ProAm, just don’t hold your breath.

On a more positive note, look towards something that is not available in your area, especially something specialised and requires low horsepower. Spraying for example, little or no diesel used compared to heavy draught work like ploughing.

All the very best in your new venture.
