What does Google Earth show up on your farm?

We all love to see what the neighbouring farmers are doing, and can snoop in all sorts of ways. But what embarassing things can be seen from space right here on the internet?

Google Earth chose to photograph my farm just hours after I had succeeded in bending the boom on the sprayer beyond repair. If you want to see my embarassment then look at 52 degrees 21 minutes 40.05 seconds North and 1 degree 3 minutes 25.54 seconds West

It does at least tell me that the picture has not been updated in the couple of years since the accident when the telegraph pole jumped out at me!!

Re: What does Google Earth show up on your farm?

I was looking at that and trying to work out a date as I thought it was last year due to the placement of the dung heaps and just after lambing as you could see I was filling one up (plus there was the tractor and trailer in the yard). Plus our neighbours had not divided their field up and our other neighbours had thier hay barn, stables, extention and sand school but no swimming pool. So I thought late April Early May and not a tuesday as the market car par was like a ghost town then I suddenly realised it said at the bottom 21 April 2007. Embarrassed

Always helps to read everything first! Although by the shadow of the elctricity pole I'd say it was about 2 to 3:30pm Although it does show the 4 trees that fell last in in the freak storm.

I was going to take a look at my Dad's place but the powers that be here in FW Towers have decided it is yet another programme we're not allowed to download for security reasons Sad

I am definitely in a "Less Favoured Area" as the image is pretty blurr but I can tell from the cropping it is the year 2000.

Isobel - you don't need to download anything if you just use Google maps, and tick the satelite box - ours is a similar date to those mentioned.

The latest update for my place was from spring 2007. At the time we were seriously drought stressed and the crops look very poor. Patchy rape in flower and every tractor wheeling visible from rolling the cereals.

It is a very useful tool, particularly now you can edit the maps and draw lines for interested parties. No hiding from DEFRA though.

Thanks for the tip. I've spotted what looks like my Mum's pup in the yard (now a year old) and the John Deere combine that was swapped for a NH around that time in preparation for harvest 2007.

Interesting to see that you can pick up so much sjk. I've just looked a bit closer after reading your comments, and can see that I was spied upon about mid morning to judge from the shadows.

What I have just noticed is the damage that was caused when the cattle next door got into my Oilseed Rape in the field oppsite my farm drive.  That had gone well past petal fall, which would suggest June onwards. The hay being made elsewhere perhaps suggests even late June or early July.

I suppose if I asked my insurer he could tell me when he paid out £7000 for the repairs to my sprayer!!  Ooops...

I own one red pick up truck. On google earth it is parked in our yard and also in my mother's yard. I have only taxed one of them.

She's obviously cloned your pick up truck in order to avoid any speeding tickets!!

Map of ours shows the topper left in the field after I broke the bottom link arm on the tractor, ad also a rather funny pattern that the drill leaves when planting OSR. Anyone got any ideas?

Perhaps the question we should be asking is what have your spotted on your neighbour's farm that looks interesting?

No one yet has dared to give out any coordinates for anything embarassing on their (or their neighbours) farms. I think I've just found the gas gun that I lost in my OSR.  Much better than finding it with the combine!!  Don't think it would squeeze through the concave.

Go to Google Maps and type CH3 6QR.  Zoom in on the field just to the right and you can see a tractor cutting the grass at my old school. Big Smile

Re: What does Google Earth show up on your farm?

I doubt they need to bother with that as it seems to be instinctual too them as when a house was being built around the lane from us they must have been there the night before cut the base of the hedge and left them in place and so the next night they came with oxy broke in to the container and cleaned out the tool and materials. It wasn't till the next day that what they had done was found out although how sucessful their escape root would have been if they had needed it would have been due to the fact the hedge is very thorny and the neighbouring field is surrounded on the other sides by ditches and the gate was still shut.

You can do a pretty good job of spying by going onto the Weather Channel UK site and playing around with their satellite map, although I don't think when you zoom in it is live, unless you get light over there at 4am. I zoomed in on Markw, or at least I think it was him, really couldn't tell as he was on his tractor.   Whoever it was, it appeared as though they were putting up a windturbine, and Dave3 I think was lurking in the hedge, hopefully harmlessly.  Maybe I hit the wrong key and in fact it was someone in Aberdeenshire putting up a turbine, at this distance I just can't be sure.
