Firstly, well done for having such a great name!!

On a serious note - have you any work experience??

Also, look at the uni prospectus, they will tell you future careers - land agency, farm management (google - sentry or velcourt), agronomy, agri journalism, business advisor etc.

Theres lots to do but what is your goal? Do you want to drive a tractor when your 'knocking on' or do you want to sit behind a desk pushing paper? What interetsts you? Arable? Livestock?

Theres plenty of careers to have but you need to identify what you want to do - you dont have to come from a farming family to work in agriculture!

The only way you will ever know is to go out and ask.

I did and the first person I asked gave me a job and 2 years later I'm still there, as Matty has said you don't have to have a farming background to get along with this industry, yeah sure it helps but where's the challenge in that. From an experience point of view, I started with very little experience and after two years I am capable of completing most of the farms operations. It is a really interesting career that I am sure you will enjoy and sure there are high and lows but you get that with every job.

Hope you find the job you are looking for Wink

Never knew there were so many of us called Matthew a name only reserved for the best! Cool

I feel I have to reply if only to break the chain of Matthews!!! LOL

Go and ask local farmers for some work, get some experience and enjoy it.  If you read my blog (link below) you'll see that I'm not from a immediate farming family but when I was your age wanted to get some work experience.  I replied to adds in FW for my local area and got a part time job to get some experience.  It was a few miles from home and it was before I could drive and my dad wouldn't be taxi.

It's a practical job so you do need some practical work.  Good Luck but more importantly Hard Work is what it's about

    Re: What should i do?

You probably have a fair chance of working for a farmer - look on fwi jobs - there's generally plenty of arable jobs etc which often include a house.

Owning it yourself though, that will require alot of initial capital (land, machinery etc). If your quite happy working for someone, go for it - a NDA would be good to have for working for someone - have a look on the jobs section anyway, you will find alot out on there.

My first job was through shooting, i started lambing for a farm etc, now i work there occasionally but work for a large estate - i did this by ringing them, getting wor experience and after that finished they offered me a job.Im still there now.

Also, even though the dairy industry is on a slight slump - if you want to go into dairy, theres some good jobs as herd managers etc.

To be honest, get work experience, it will teach you alot!

Get  a job on a farm, get some proper hands on experience and then decide weather you still want to go to college as they might want to keep you on, college is a bit of a waste of time and you can do course's to get your certificates throw work, i started work when i was 16 straight from school and spent 5 years at that job without going to uni and ended up being head tractor driver, learned it all on farm and got all the certificates i needed and wanted.

Sorry, do you mean going to somewhere like Harper post A-levels, or to ag college after GCSE's?

I wouldnt bother with the former. No real farming, pile of debt, and three wasted years.....unless you want to be a land agent :(

Aye unless your wanting to be land agent or manager i wouldnt bother. If you want to be a farm worker or say foreman, just do a NDA - cheaper and easier

    Re: What should i do?

I'm doing A levels then im off to university as i want to be a manager, or land agent. I did also consider agronomy too.

I'l post a couple of links for you....

    http://www.sentry.co.uk/index.php?pageid=2023&section=farms - Farm management careers

    http://www.sentry.co.uk/index.php?section=advisory - Farm advisors

    http://www.yara.com/careers/ - Agronomy/crop science

    Random Arable Jobs - http://www.fwi.co.uk/jobs/search/searchresults.aspx?keywords=&sortBy=Date&sortdir=Descending&page=1&pageSize=10&cat7905=7907

Or if you want to get an idea of jobs/salary's/qualifications go to http://www.fwi.co.uk/jobs/default.aspx  and have a look through the different sectors

http://www.struttandparker.com/html/land-and-farm-management.php - Land management etc. A land agent is basically the same as an estate agent - but for farms and land

Answer these - What do you want to do in agriculture? Livestock, Arable, Veg, ?

Do you want to drive a tractor and do hard physical labour?

Do you want to sit behind a desk on rainy days with paper work, manage staff and still do bits of farm work?

Do you want to be out there every weather?

Do you want lots of money for doing a 9-5 job?

The return of naturally Shaped Fruit & Veg. is possible by avioding science from nature.Because any thing nature does it in one month, science does it in only fifteen days.Which is harmfull ofr human life.
