Dosent matter haw maney K it can do but if you are driving faster than 20MPH then you need airbrakes on the tractor. you can drive aney tractor so long as it is no more than 2.4m wide. so for an exampal you could drive a JD6920 with the axals set to 2.4m and youd be legal. Jus check that the 2.4m is for the inside width of the tyers or the outside as i cant remember but i darsay somone on here will.

Re: what tractors can i drive at 16 ?

The 2.45m width is for the overall width of the tractor, including mudguards, steps, mirrors and anything else which may stick out.

You can pull a small trailer which is no wider than 2.45m, and has either one axle or two, as long as the centres of the axles are no further that 1.3m apart.  This probably means any silage or grain trailer over about eight tonnes will be too big.

I'm not sure about speed, the rules were drawn up when most tractors struggled to reach 15mph, so there are probably no restrictions.

Hope that helps, happy driving! Wink

     ...and no tracks.

they are the rules.... but no-one cares, and it doesn't really matter, no-one is going to measure your tractor or anything, so don't worry too much.

good luck with the test, don't worry, very easy.

I'd love to see 80 ft of trailer behind a tractor, but i can tell you for one thing, it will not go in a single of my gateways.... and maybe not even the junctions.

The boss got stoped last year with 180 feet worth of tralers i have apsalotley no idea haw he was going roundcorners or junctions. But he had ALL the dragline eqipment hooked together all the house reals the booster pumps and a manure pump as well as the tractor. i think he had to stop and unhook it all about a mile from the farm so he could unhook singal implaments so he could get into the lanway.

It's quite a while since i did my tractor test as a kid but i remember it had to be under 100hp......I remember this because i turned up with a TW25 and the guy laughed and asked are you taking the P!$$ ..Sent me home so ended up doing it with the 7610 which was a rush job to wash it /unhitch it from the sprayer and replace many bulbs to make it legal........HaHa...?

love these stories from across the pond of all this big kit and everything...

and to answer agrimania's question, if he's in the uk.... the trailer test is only for vehicles as in cars/4x4's, not agricultural machines, i.e. tractors.

once you pass your tractor test or you normal car test, you can pull/carry anything behind or infront of the tractor

Re: what tractors can i drive at 16 ?

I did my tractor test, but this rule really wants looking at.

Why should a 16 year old be allowed to potentialy take 15 tonnes or more of tractor and trailer on the road at 30 mph when the only other thing he/she can legaly drive is a 49cc scooter that would struggle to out run a new tractor?

Most people start off on trailer work using vehicles that weigh more than you can legaly drive on a full car license and with minimal training and probaly mininal maintainance too. On our congested roads that is asking for trouble.

yea well the laws messed up in loads of places, but who cares...Stick out tongue

i mean i'd say driving a tractor, especially with a large implement on, requires more skill than driving a car, how ever 16 year olds are allow to turn up at a test, do half an hour of basic driving, covering less than a mile, with no traffic around and get a license; where as too drive a car you have to do theory and then a practicle and drive 'properly'.

and combines and sprayers are agricultural vehicles, so covered by a tractor license or a car license, although technically you can't drive an agricultural vehicle on a tractor licence that is more then 2.45 metres wide. so that basiclly rules out combines until you have a car license.

Re: what tractors can i drive at 16 ?

I'm not sure if I should bring this up really, but actually combines, self propelled foragers, beet harvesters, anything of that type are not covered by a tractor licence.  These things are specialist heavy equipment rather than tractors, and require a different category for road driving.

Sprayers obviously require the relevent training to operate, but as for road driving it would depend on whether they are self propelled or tractor mounted.

as well a tractor licance wont cover you to drive a teleyhandler on the road towing a traler you have to haveyour car traler licance for that one for some screwed up reason.

over here in N.Ireland the health and safety executive have decreed that as well as your driving licience you have to do a course on driving a tractor(13 to 16) ,and at 16 another on using the pto.you cannot drive a tractor legally without either course even on private land.

i would of said combines, telehandlers and sprayers are classed as agricultural vehicles, as they are used in agriculture, and  so an agricultural catorgry F license should surfice. (iknow to operate them you should have a telehandler, and sprayer license, but for actually just driving them on the road, an agricultural or car license is fine i would have thought)

I coudn't find the original government site, but this link sums up the basics:

    http://www.johnexley.co.uk/jedtagri.htm

Combines etc are "agricultural engines", which means you need a lorry licence to operate them on the road.  Lots of other good tips on that site as well. Wink

i think you will find anything other than an "agricultural tractor" ie a combine, self propeled sprayer, telehandler it is 21 years old before you can drive them on the road but they are covered by the tractor/car licence once you reach 21

Re: what tractors can i drive at 16 ?

Just a quick reply before i go to bed... Im 16 but very nearly 17. I did my tractor test which from start to finish was 40mins... so not long at all... Anyone who doesnt no how to drive a tractor could of easily passed it with flying colours! Its pointless realy.. you pay the money and all you get on the ticket is basically saying that you can go foreward and backwards and manage to turn the wheel at the same time! lol.. One question on the road signs was a sign saying STOP on it and the silly bugger said what does this mean?? was he trying to insult me, i dont no! lol.. Anyway i was carting bales with an artic with 55 bales on with a ford 7840 Sle powerstar. It was overweight empty so full i dont have a clue what it would of been. Nothin to worry about really. Police passed and never bothered.. As long as the load is safe and strapped and being driven steady then they are not arsed.. pluss if they did pull you they cant be bothered talkin as they dont wont to argue with us! :P Other than that i was ferrying for me uncle (contractor) with a 16t Baily trailer and jb.. Both of which are over weight and width... Anyway on that not im off to bed.. Cows to be milked soon...lol..

                        Cheers,

Re: what tractors can i drive at 16 ?

I thought for Telehandlers you needed a forklift licence as it is classes as lifting equipment.

I think in a FW a while ago they have an article or list of the different licences you need for different machines etc.

I'm just frustrated that I have to take another test to drive a rigid vehicle between 3.5 and 7.5 tons as I passed after 1997.

It is as messed up with Construction plant gear you can pass a test to drive a large 360 digger but to drive a mini digger you have to take a seperate another test and I think it is also different weights as well 3 ton, 5 ton etc.
