Sure is bud - Category F. But you can only drive tractors that are under 3 metres wide (i think or around that width anyway) on the road - nothing over. I think  you can apply for the test a month or couple of weeks before your birthday.

    Hope that helps.

yea its 16, tractor should be less then 2.45 meters wide (although no1 really cares bout that); you can't pull a trailer with a turntable/dolly;  with out a license you can only drive to and from your test; you apply for your test through the DSA, but be warned there can be a waiting period due to the fact that all paper work for a catogory F license has to be organsied in New Castle apprently. ermm the actual test is fairly simple, turn up at a meeting place to meet your assessor, make sure your insured and the tractor is taxed. He will ask you to check the oil, then drive round in a circuit going left, then in a circuit going right, emergency stop, reverse round a corner, junctions, and thats the main part of it. basicly just remember to look in your mirror, look over your shoulder at your blind spot, signal, and manovere. Then the assessor asks about trailers, 3 point linkage and odds and sods. He will ask you to identify road signs and ask you about 5 questions on genral stuf. He will ask you 2 read a number plate.  and that is the hole test, job done. So just apply for a provisional ASAP and read the highway code, and you'll pass easy.

When you are 16 you are limted to 8ft or 2.45 meters. You can't drive tracklayers (Crawler) and turntable trailer.

You don't need a seperate license for a tracked vehicle, but should be 21 to drive it. Although, no one would police it I shouldn't think.

Re: whats the legal age for a tractor license

    This is copied from another post I typed about 18 months ago. Rules are still the same as far as I know;

Theres a lot of crap been posted here as "Fact" by people who evidely have no idea what their on about. Can I please clear stuff up once and for all. This is as I see the rules and regulations, and it is most peoples interpretation of them. It is not legal advice, however I belive it to be correct.

At 16 you may take a tractor on the road with L plates. It must have no trailer. It can only be driven to and from a class F driving test, on any road where tractors are legally allowed to go (ie; not motorways.) It must be less than 2.45 meters wide at the widest point.

Once you have passed your class F you can drive any tractor PROVIDED it is less than 2.45 meters wide. You may tow a trailer PROVIDED it has 1 or 2 close coupled axels. (so no artics), and it also has to be less than 2.45 meters wide. Any implement can be attached PROVIDED it is less than 2.45 meters wide. An implement means that it has no wheels on the floor while on the road.

At 17 you may take your class B driving test (car) you may also (if not already done the class F test) take any tractor and trailer combination on the road PROVIDED it has L plates. L plates are not needed once you pass class B test. You can tow any trailer behind a tractor as long as the Maximum Autherised Mass (MAM) is less than 24 tonnes, whether you have passed your class B or not.

Once you have passed your class B test then the tractor does not need L plates but you cannot drive certain machinary (combines, sprayers etc) until you are either 18 or 21 (depends on the machine)

You may also tow a trailer maxium LOADED weight of 750kg behind a car if it has no brakes. You are also allowed to tow a trailer of any weight LESS than that of the towing vehicle as as long as the OUTFIT (ie car and loaded trailer) weighs less than 3.5 tonnes. Eg if you had a 2 tonne LR then you could tow a 1.5 tonne trailer, as long as it is braked. You wouldnt be allowed to tow a 2 tonne trailer (MAM > 3.5t). Equally you wouldnt be allowed to tow a 1.5 tonne trailer behind a 1 tonne car.

To tow more than the MAM of the car, you need a class B + E licence, which involves a basic reverse and genearal road driving. It costs I belive about £500 with training.

You cannot take tracklaying tractors on the road until you have passed a class H test. The exception being a Quadtrack because it is pivot (artic) steering as opposed to steering with the tracks. You need to be 21 to do the class H test I believe.

As far as getting started, apply for a provisional driving licence and once youve got it book a class F test. You can do this online on the DSA website. www.dsa.gov.uk

www.direct.gov.uk for more info, and the full guidelines.

Saying that "no-one will police" a law is a false economy. You have an accident and are too young or not licenced properlly then your insurace will be cancelled and you will face legal proceedings from the police as well as having to pay for any damage out of your own pocket.

well i think it varies a bit mate. I was looking at it in northumberland and the local ag college were ripping your eyes out, and coming back for the sockets! It cost a bloody fortune!! But i found someone else and they seem to be pretty reasonable. I think it was Dan (not sure) but they said it was about £50? Thats porbz the cheapest you will get i reckon.

Good luck, hope you got a thick wallet!

Re: whats the legal age for a tractor license

    Right......

I have a prospectus with prices here for a place in york - i think this will apply just about everywhere So, the tractor test fopr juniors is £60, Test for adults is £90 and you can do an advanced course for £100. Also, NPTC Cert. for competence in tractor driving is £180.

Hope that clears it up for you mate (its the 2008 version).

To carry on from good old matty... the tractor driving competence one has nothing to do with on the road, it's a seperate test, it's called the 'mo1' and most agricultural colleges have their students take it (if appropriate) at a much lower cost (ours was £20 i think).

The MO1 is a load of bull relay basickley it is can u hitch up a traler and somthing on the 3 point linkage and a load of oter stuph like turning the tractor off every time you get out (thows of u who work haw oftan do u do this when u are hitching somthing up because i never do) basickley its to say that you have sothing that says u know haw to drive round and round in cercals and know all the theory stuph. Also if u do a ag cource at Sparshoult its free. Your better of to spend the money that you would spend on that on doing the Telehandaler one that you have to have by law.

This is not true, the tractor must be steered with wheels, therefore a Quadtrac cannot be driven on cat F or B.

Self-propelled machines like combines and foragers also require a different licence, cat C (HGV), no matter what age the driver is.  Check the rules here: http://www.johnexley.co.uk/agri.htm

yea the mo1 is a load of bollocks, but some people like their employees to have it... the telehandler one is a little more expensive(£60 with a college), although you get a 3 day corse which includes training and the test, and it is a veryy good thing to do and have, It's improved my skills, and makes you quallifyed.

Re: whats the legal age for a tractor license

The telehandler licence is probably similar to my fork truck licence.  The object is not to train you to drive but to learn safety, such as looking behind when reversing, avoiding overweight loads, not carrying people on the forks etc.  Something you might think is useless until you run over your child.
