Ron on your weather map I could not determine wind direction,If it was a north wind, the snow and cold winds would hit Brian in Kansas. (I see from the maps you are due north of Brian by some thousand miles)
There seemed to be a funnel of blue cold area tracking down from Manitoba into the centre of USA with the extreme east and west still relatively free from snow.
Our weather maps show wind direction and often dictates our weather. A north wind while cold will tip snow over the north of Britain, (at this time of the year) and in our Midlands area of GB only get a hint of sleet, or often its said it could be too cold for snow. A westerly wind is very often mild and wet of occasional soft snow. An easterly wind can , or used to bring dry drifting snow that actually filled the country roads and lanes level full with an actual fall of only a few inches, and of coarse a south wild mild and often dry.
And is the currant cold weather you are having coinciding with a full moon.
