Where to apply pig muck in arable rotation?

For next season we'll have a couple of thousand tonnes of pig muck to spread and i don't want to chuck it anywhere, i'd like to establish a place in the rotation for the muck, so that all the ground gets some muck every 4 years.

The current rotation is WW / WW / WB / WOSR
We drill with a Claydon SR
We're planning on hiring in 3 spreaders and loading with a 360 to get it spread as quick as possible (hopefully within 1 week)

Someone has suggested us to put it in between WOSR and 1st wheats but my concern is that with the chopped OSR + muck, there will be a large amount of OM to incorporate.

Someone else has said to put in on the barley stubble and the muck would give the OSR an N kick during the autumn/winter, this is a very short window and it's tight enough as it is already without adding another operation.

Another thought is put it on the 1st wheat stubble to give the 2nd wheat a kick, this has the biggest window but will there be too much residual N and put the following WB on the floor.

    All opinions welcome.

If at first you don't succeed... get someone else to do it!

I would say it depends a lot on the consistency and analysis of the "muck". Are you talking about a lot of fresh strawy manure, the same well rotted in a heap, or just slurry? There is an enormous difference in what your underground army has to deal with.

I'm putting muck on between first and second wheats at the moment. Next year I've got rape, so it will go on that stubble, then get ploughed in, as I'll have more time on bad harvest days to get on with it (having my own spreader makes a big difference there).

we tend to put  any solid muck we have on 1st wheat  stubble, gives us more time to apply and  will help the second wheat . Get some n-mins done  in  the barley if your worried about residual N. As for putting it on stubble prior to osr  iam not so sure spread a bit on a field this time 4th wheat  going into 5th wheat  had  some osr seed over so drilled field, shackerate and combi-drill , mucks still  sitting in  tilth all dried out and doing sweet nothing just acting like big clods.

OSR benefits from autumn nitrogen so after the winter barley would be best agronomically - you should have 2 - 3 weeks to get it spread and worked in before osr planting. If you were planting osr after wheat I don't see how you would have time to apply it without risking delaying rape drilling at your busiest time of year.

Logistically, it might be better if it went on between 1st & 2nd wheats as you can do it in September. A good root structure makes the 2nd wheat less prone to take all. Since you are growing second wheats I assume that you are on heavyish land, which runs the risk of poor seebeds & reduced establishment if you are planting it in October, hence why any help to the crop from muck would be a good idea.

    Whoops. Hadn't spotted that bit!

It doesn't make much difference, other than the smell lingering for a bit longer.

I'm not familiar with the Claydon SR - if it isn't moving much soil then perhaps there will be even less mineral soil N available, so all the more reason to put it on before a later drilled 2nd wheat IMHO.

bubble6470, I assume you have more than a few acres therefore 2000 tonnes is not going to go a long way.Have you tested for OM levels, and if so  have you considered a different approach and put it where you have lowest OM irrespective of the place in the rotation, even if it is spread in front of different crops?
