Thanks for your message ***. I know it took an awful long time and there are a couple of glitches still to sort out. But it is much faster, much clearer and the picture function is great.

I've just realised where all the **** are coming from. Your name must be in the banned words list because it might be seen as rude. I'll have to switch that off!

This new forum layout looks different.  Looks like I will have to have an avatar  Wink

I'm not sure whether that is a dig about our avatar glitch, but I'll rise above it!

We're getting closer to solving the issue and if you try to upload one it might just work. Let me know if you try and fail.

For those of you unsure what an avatar is (I keep being shouted at in the office for using the word!) it is the little picture that appears with your name next to your posts.

Tried a few times, without any noticeable success.  He his-self seems to be the only non-staffer to have succeeded, perhaps he would let us all in on the secret.

The spell checker is a real boon, by the way.

    Your wish is my command....!

For some reason it is making me approve avatars which I have now done for you. If anyone is in the same boat ie has tried but it hasn't appeared let me know and i'll look around the back.

I'll put it on My Photos.

    What service!

Do FW keep you chained to your desk or do you look after we forum users for fun?

    Re: Your new forum.

I'm putting in a few extra hours at the moment as we've put so much work into trying to get decent site I don't want to let you all down by not being around if you have queries. It's no real hardship as I'm finding it quite fun!

To warn you though, I might struggle to do much over the weekend as I'm off to my parents tomorrow for a family dinner to celebrate their 40th wedding anniversary. I think I'll be in lots of trouble if I slope off during that!

AllyR - your avatar is now up. If you want to have another go at the picture Andrew/Whinger's guide was pretty good. It's here if you still need it:

At the right hand end of the tool bar above the message box.  Icon is ABC plus a tick.  If you try to use it for the first time it will take you to a screen where you can down load a spell checker which will link with this icon.  It will also give spell check functions with any Internet Explorer screen.

    Re: Your new forum.

I have waited some time before commenting on the new forum layouts.

I prefer to have more space to read contributor's inputs rather than have a largely unused space for pictures and wide frames. I also find it difficult to move from one thread to another without going back to the FWI home page. Additionally I cannot find where I can edit my own contribution once posted.

In short Isabel. It is a reluctant thumbs down from me unless you can find a way of letting me get more of your correspondents' writing on to a page.

I suspect that like many on dial up, I have limited time to read and contribute and don't want to waste time scrolling uneccessary space nor taking time to move from thread to thread.

    Yours faithfully

    Peter Wells

    Re: Your new forum.

Peter, Thanks for taking the time to give us some feedback. I've got some tips that may help you. You can edit a post that you have already added by clicking on the "Edit" button that appears on the post after it has been submitted (you'll find it close to the reply button). The Edit function is set up to discourage people from editing their post for the wrong reasons, so you can only edit it within 15 minutes of posting - leaving you a bit of time to correct spelling mistakes and so on. If people want longer than that we can look into it. Note that you can only save changes if you describe the changes you have made in the Edit Notes box. Again, this is to discourage abuse but you only need a word or two. In terms of navigating around the forums it might help you to know that pressing on the grey 'forums' button in the top navigation bar will bring you to the main forum menu. Once you are in a discussion section ie Talking Point you can move between threads by pressing the 'Next and 'Previous' buttons at the top of each page. In terms of trying to get more text on a page I will have a play with the settings in edit profile to see if there is a simpler way of displaying things which might help dial-up users. Best wishes, Isabel

Actually ignore part of that last answer. The edit function isn't appearing for you is it? I will investigate.

you're too quick isabel, just looked back and no edit button, good to see you're on the ball, overtime tonight i think!

Don't know if you've already tried this, but I found it easier to read the posts by changing the view of the thread. You can either do it at the top of the page by clicking on 'change view' and selecting 'flat view' rather than threaded, or by going into 'edit profile' and changing it in site options. That way you dont have to click through each post to read it.

    Hope that helps,

    Isabel,

Just playing around with the gallery again. Under each photo appears 'details'. Do we really need this as it even tells us the type of camera used!?

Sorry to be such a  dunce but no spell check thingy in my posting box. I am on firefox browser so it already underlines a spelling mistake,I was hoping for a correction device.

    Hi polledholsteinbreeder,

The program linked to by the FW site is called ieSpell and only works with Internet Explorer browser.  I can only suggest you check on-line to see if there is a more sophisticated checker available as an add-on for Firefox 2.

on 'myspace' when you get a comment or someone replies to you you get a little icon on your homepage that says 'new comments' or whatever it is youve got.

dont you think we should have somthing like that on here ?

    cheers
