Vigolo Power Harrow

Making its first UK debut at Lamma was the new VDB Power Harrow. New options include a quick-fit tine mechanism, longer tines and a strengthened frame. This 3m version can cope with up to 220hp at a cost of £4950.

Vaderstad Carrier Drill

Vaderstad now offers its Carrier drill as a trailed machine. First introduced as a tractor mounted drill, the main features of the drill are maintained - 3m working width, 1100 litres hopper capacity, seed roller metering and disc coulters. The roller press though, is now rubber rather than steel to allow the drill to travel on the road and the extra space in front of the drill provided by the draw bar enables a set of levelling tines to be fitted.

Landquip has added 4000 and 5000-litre self-propelled units to its sprayer line-up.

Using an air-suspended tractor unit supplied by Househam, the firm fits its own sprayer with stainless steel tank, 700-litre/min centrifugal pump and Pommier aluminium booms which can stretch up to 32m.

Power comes from a 236hp 6.6-litre Iveco engine. Prices start from £95,000.

Techmagri has introduced a new pneumatic drill to its range which has so many tine and coulter options for use when direct drilling, min tilling or different soil types, the company invites customers to "build your own". Available in 3m to 6m working widths, the Techmasem M60 PR drill has a 1700-litre hopper and employs two Accord metering systems to convey seed to the coulters. Once sown, the soil is compressed with a roller and the ground levelled with a set of covering tines.

With an incredibly wet summer behind us and bank balances looking a bit healthier, drainage is once more at the front of many farmers' minds, according to Suffolk-based AFT Trenchers.

The company reports a significant surge in interest for its tractor-mounted trenchers. A pto-driven chain cuts a slot down to depths of 1.6m while augers sweep the soil away to either side. Perforated drainage pipes can then be laid down the back of the digging boom.

Claimed to be 10 times faster than a backhoe, a basic linkage mounted trencher costs £18,000 and requires a tractor of at least 60hp.

Following several years of development work to develop a mechanical system to remove weeds from within rows of plant, rather than just alongside them, Garford has now produced an advanced version of its Robocrop weeder. Controlled by a computer system which "sees" where plants are, a hydraulically rotated blade enters the space between plants to remove weeds. Built as a multi-row system, the Robocrop will appeal to growers looking to cut down on chemical herbicides although at about £7000 a row, it perhaps needs some consideration.
