The discovery of type six has been confirmed by the Dutch Ministry of Agriculture. There is currently no vaccine licensed for type six in Europe, so only time will tell what happens next.

There really can be no excuse for not vaccinating now. Stock could come from central/southern France right into northern England and carry BT with them. Thankfully in this case it was BTV8, but next time it could easily be BTV1 which is also circulating in the south of France and that would be a completely...

First UK Bluetongue outbreaks of the summer

We've just had reports in that two cases of bluetongue have been found in East Sussex and Hertfordshire. Both of the animals came from within the protection zones within France. DEFRA says the discovery of the cases isn't unexpected and there's no evidence to suggest the disease is circultating...

Cost of bluetongue vaccinations

A couple of people have raised concerns that they are being over-charged by vets for their bluetongue vaccinations. DEFRA initially said the vaccines should cost £27.50-£33.00 for the 50ml bottles (55-66p per ml) and about £16.35-£19.65 for the 20ml bottles (82-98p per ml) plus VAT, to cover the overhead...

There should be no problem. Unfortunately, due to the timescale the vaccine has been produced in there hasn't been full testing done on pregnant stock, but Bovilis BTV8 is a killed vaccine and so poses no threat to unborn animals. I have spoken with plenty of people who have vaccinating in-calf cows...
