  • Severe outbreak of TB

Visited a client outside Tralee today who had many reproductive problems with freshly calved cows. There was a severe outbreak of T.B. in an outside farm where his dry cows and spring heifers were on grazing ground. The client did not feed them dry cow minerals as he was afraid of badgers accessing same...

  • Outbreak of TB in cows associated with Deer

Morning rise and time, first calls this week are down outside Kenmare, County Kerry. The farmers visited here are complaining of outbreaks of TB and blaming deer for the spread of same. One farmer managed to shoot 8 deer in one night as part of a radication programme. The farmers visited here are...

  • Reports of a tiff are greatly exaggerated

Mark Twain, in the title there. Not sure it worked, but it’s made me feel a bit cultured. Poor old Andrew George though, eh? And I’m not just pitying him for this terrible photo we keep wheeling out on FWi: Having spent years helping the NFU thrash out arguments advocating a supermarket ombudsman...

  • The age of austerity

Mr News Editor, Mr Chief Reporter and I went into London on Tuesday to have lunch with DEFRA farm minister Jim Paice. We were meeting him ahead of his official announcement about the possibility of allowing farmers to cull badgers to help combat bovine tuberculosis. The idea was we’d get the low...

  • Re: Cows and TB

It might be that a vaccinated cow would have antibodies just like an infected cow, and if they detect TB through an antibody test that could make a vaccinated cow look like it was positive.

  • Some badger to love

Brian May’s back. Fan’s of my last post on the hirsute, badger-loving rocker’s anti-cull campaign will be distraught to know I haven’t got any quality puns this time. Sorry, Steve. I have, however, got this brilliant photo of the Queen guitarist having a debate with some Welsh...

  • Bad(ger) hair day

I love it when celebs get involved with farming issues. Sometimes I’m impressed that they’re having a go at trying to get people interested in food and the way its produced. I mean, just look at the great work of Nell McAndrew, or Cheggars perhaps… Ok, I lie. I usually get incredibly...

  • Cost sharing or cost dumping?

Livestock producers deserve to be confused and extremely angry. You’re being asked to pay for something over which you have no control - exotic diseases currently not originating in this country. And there’s a wealth of other measures coming in to overhaul animal health and welfare, which are a minefield...
