Also looking for loader tractor, 4cyl, 4wd upto about 10k. Any particular bargains to be looking for aswell as the dogs to avoid? Like looks of ford 6610, case 895xl, older and simpler build but still good for a days work.

Avoid McCormick CX etrashifts like the plague ! We had one with lots of niggles and the “clutch” needed recalibrating almost weekly. We now have Case JX90U….. bulletproof and far more stable

I think the best loader tractors have the gearsticks or at least the shuttle on the left….A MF390T with a 12-12 or  IH895 have been my favourites for older tractors

Mf 290 or Leyland 272 syncro they dont drink a lot.The Leyland can reverse as fast as it goes forward and the gear sticks are either side os the seat.

the 10 series is a bit of a pain for forward reverse work, but seem to last for ever.

our 1984 7610 4wd is on about 9000hrs mainly on loader work.

I forgot about the old leyland 272…What a nice gearbox and alight clutch..!

I had a 6610 fwa 1983 with the “h” pattern culumn change on a loader and loved the gearbox but the steering system always seemed a bit weak..that “damper”  ram on the left side was always needing replaced causing a lot of front wheel wobble on the road…

if your looking at ford i think 7740 would be better suited? although you might struggle to fidn one for under 10k. looking in farming classifieds there seem to be a few 30 series massies with loaders for 5-10k dont know if there any good though. 895 would be a good loader tractor but again may be a problem getting a decent oen for 10k?

Ideal thanks, i’m a Deere man through and through at heart but the ideal TIDY 26/2850 might be like trying to find a very small needle in a very big haystack!! Did go and look at a 7810 other day but being a 6cyl was just a bit big and i’m afraid Hp has to give way to size, am quite keen on either a ford or a case ( had been told the 895 was a good tool, better with the XL cab though.) but condition is going to be the stumbleing point i think, wont do an awful lot so want something that will be reliable when it is used and is in good enough cosmetically that it can be maintained to hold its value as a true ‘practical classic’!

we have had a case 5130 for 9 years done 11500 hours has the shutle for forward and back, so good on the loader,

had hardly any trouble never had a new cluch.

Might be a bit big though, and not much power when on the road

    But outherwise a cheap tractor.
