             Selling the family silver.

More central heating for Private Equity and possibly the last straw for Northants Police.

At least “Shredded Wheat” had nothing taken away much further than Switzerland.

Apart from a few farms, is there anything left in Britain that is British owned? Seriously, can anybody tell me if there are still some “household name” companies that are British owned?

No, sadly this country is poo.

As a nation who are expert at screwing their farmers, we do seem to excel in retail – Tesco for example is a “household name” all accross Asia and eastern Europe. In the same vane, Diageo, SAB Miller and Scottish & Newcastle drinks groups are british. Also many tobacco brands.

So supplier screwers, booze and **** then.

W&W, do you have insider knowledge ? When is this takeover going to happen ?

What is British owned ?  BP, for example of a multinational company, is traded on many global stockmarkets and it’s shares owned by individuals and pension funds across the world. In this global economy it’s almost impossible for a company to reach household-name status and stay in the confines of one nation. You would need to look at co-operatives and private companies like John Lewis, The Co-Op and Duchy Originals (or is it Organics) and these may well have overseas financial backing.

    RBS is almost entirely British.

In fact, both RBS and HBOS are fairly recent acquisitions.
